Summer is coming and we have been busy! Welcome to June! The weather is beautiful, our resorts are quite full, and everyone has been having a great time. Memorial Day weekend saw an influx of about 35,000 tourists and there were so many great activities around town that people just couldn't attend them all in such a short time.
This month is chock full of activities as well so if you're in town, you will have the choice of attending the many fun events, or just relaxing on the terrace of your oceanfront condo. Maybe a bit of both would be the ticket. Circus Mexicus is the big one for June and I have added an article below with more details.
I can't send this newsletter without giving you another reminder that our 5th Annual Las Vegas Night for Charity is coming right up. It will be held on Saturday, July 2nd, 2016. Please make your plans to come and enjoy the festivities. You can get tickets at the door or you can stop by the sales office at the Sonoran Sky if you're in town and want to pick some up ahead of time.
We're still eagerly awaiting the Home Port construction to start again. The last word was that the Feds were ready to release the next installment of funds so that the project could continue. The contractor was changing so that has to go through the bidding and selection process. Maybe that's what the holdup is at this point. In any case, as of today, the project is still dormant. Hopefully, by next month, I will have some good news to share about the endeavor.
Enjoy your month, come to Rocky Point if you can, and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. Let me put my experience and expertise to work for you, and remember, as always, I've been here full time for 8 years and I am more than happy to help you with whatever you need, whether Sonoran Resorts related or not. Just give me a call or send me an email any time and I will do my very best to help you. If I can't help you myself, I'm sure that I can point you in the right direction and help find you someone who can.

Tourist Assistance Unit Continues to Impress with Wide Range of Activities to Help Tourists
On the 26th of February, the Mayor officially announced activation of the Puerto Penasco Tourist Assistance Unit (in Spanish: Unidad Auxiliar Turistico) consisting of 20 men and women, all bilingual and well trained and whose primary objectives are to serve, guide, inform and protect visitors, both national and foreign as well as the residents of Puerto Peasco. This exciting addition to our city by the sea is a very important step toward preparing the city for its destined future as a world class resort destination. The carefully selected Tourist Assistance Unit is made up of naturally congenial service-oriented personnel who genuinely care about the welfare of all the people who live in and visit Puerto Peasco. The Unit is headed up by Luis Molina, who, himself, comes from a hospitality background. The rest of the State of Sonora is also taking note, as Luis Molina commented, "Our TAU is the first of its kind in the State of Sonora, with a specific purpose to assist the visitors coming to Rocky Point (Both national and foreigners)". You will easily recognize agents of the Tourist Assistance Unit dressed in khaki pants, white shirts and safari hats riding bicycles, ATVs, and UTVs around the tourist areas and making themselves available to serve the public with their knowledge and training to answer questions of all sorts, give directions and help with any problems that might arise during your visit to Puerto Peasco. On the back of their shirts in clear lettering is "Auxiliar Turistico". Mayor Kiko Munro also appointed a six member Tourist Assistance Advisory Committee comprised of President, Jim Ringquist, Secretary, Enrique Gaxiola, Treasurer, Donna Whitman, and additional members Mark Olszewski, Manny Snchez, and Steve Schwab. This committee serves as an intermediary between the public and the Local Government, providing oversight and support for the TAU, through Luis Molina and Mayor Kiko Munro, as well as being involved in a broad range of other tourist support and tourism promotion duties.
In the relatively short period of it's existence, the TAU has made a real difference and scored some major victories in helping tourists when they needed it. Unit Director Molina reports that the TAU Agents have been the first responders on accident scenes (mostly ATV and UTV) in over 60 cases and they have definitely saved at least one life, and possibly more, by being nearby when needed. The success stories of TAU Agents go beyond life saving first aid as well. During Spring Break and Semana Santa (Easter Holiday), the TAU Agents were able to reunite 15 families with their lost children, give directions and information countless times, and they even helped tourists who with dead batteries or who were stuck in the sand. That's true full-service, service.
All of the Agents are trained in a number of tourist related skills and ongoing training is mandatory. We are always looking for specialists in their field who are willing to volunteer to come and give them additional training. Please contact the TAU Advisory Committee to volunteer. Some of the current and ongoing training that the Agents receive is in first aid, CPR, self defense, police procedures, environment protection, natural history of the area, folk tales of the town, ongoing English classes, and tourist assistance. This list is by no means all inclusive and if you are willing to teach a different relevant skill or subject, please let us know.
TAU administration is located on the west end of the Peasco EXPO Convention Center located on Blvd Rodger & Jeanette Clifton which is the road to the Rodeo Drive curios area. There is another TAU office on the Malecon. You are welcome to stop by any time during their hours of operation. Office hours are from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM and their local land line phone number is (638) 382-8413. You may also reach the TAU advisory committee at 602-774-1777 or email: touristassistancerockypoint@gmail.com. You can also visit the committee's Facebook site at Puerto Peasco Tourist Assistance Unit Advisory Committee. For your information, the city also has a web site: www.puertopenasco.gob.mx. The bottom line is that Puerto Peasco is well on the road to preparing for the already growing tourism and the much-anticipated touristic growth expected for the next several years and to be boosted by the completion of the Puerto Peasco home cruise port. Mayor Kiko Munro is keenly aware of how these new services and other services that he has planned for the near future can affect tourism growth. The Tourist Assistance Unit is and will remain a very important part of the future of Puerto Penasco. |
Excitement Mounts for Sonoran Resorts 5th Annual Las Vegas Night for Charity on Saturday, July 2nd!
Interest and excitement for this, the fifth annual Las Vegas Night for Charity has been simply effervescent! Just as a reminder, the fun starts at 7:00 PM on Saturday, July 2nd, inside the cool air conditioned environment of our beautiful Los Volcanes Ballroom on the second floor in the Luxurious Sonoran Sky beachfront resort on Sandy Beach.
We will have a shuttle service so we encourage you to park along the road to the resort and our volunteers will be escorting guests right to the elevators. We have many charity-minded volunteers from our sales staff and corporate office to handle ticket sales right at the door. Your $35 US Dollar entry is worth $300 dollars in "Charity Chips" and one raffle ticket for the dozens and dozens of drawings held throughout the night. You can, and should purchase additional tickets for cash or chips anytime during the night. We say "should" because this year our volunteers and generous businesses, artisans and artists have broken the record for prize donations, nearly one hundred valuable prizes as of today and still coming in. We'll tease you with a few of the prizes below. They will all be awarded in raffles and later in the auction. Wow!
Oh, your ticket is good for dinner provided again this year by local restaurateur Ramn Ramos of Chef Ramon's Restaurant on your right, just before you enter the Old Port area. Ramn has a great buffet every Saturday and Sunday too. If you're too busy breaking the bank and miss the buffet, no problemo, amigo. Ramn will be serving snacks and appetizers for the rest of the night! Ramn will have cash bars set up serving your favorite libations throughout the evening as well.
Examples of just a few of the prizes you can win or bid on include 18 holes of golf for a foursome on the Links at Las Palomas, 18 holes for two at Mayan Palace, and 2 night stays in resort hotels and condominiums such as Playa Bonita, Laos Mar, Sonoran Sun and Sonoran Sky. And there are many, many more: spa treatments, dinners, quad and jet ski rentals, sunset cruises, drinks, bottles of Tequila Peasco, photography sessions, artwork, shuttle rides from Phoenix and more. Plus, we will be revealing some incredible surprise prizes for the auction at the end of the night where you'll use your accumulated chips to bid.
Once again this year we are lucky and grateful to have Randy Van Hulle, owner of Ace Casino Rentals of Tucson lending his expertise to our event. Through his company founded in 1987, Randy has over 3,000 corporate casino functions to his credit. Randy and his wife Linda drive in from Tucson every year to give of their time and expertise for this charity event. Linda and a few of his employees also volunteer as dealers.
This event was the brainchild of Jim Ringquist, Director of Sales and Marketing for the Sonoran Resorts Group, who wanted to help local charities. He starts putting this event together in January and you will see him working alongside Randy, overseeing the food and beverage service, helping dealers, fetching prizes when needed and would probably wash dishes in the kitchen if the need arose, but he does such a great job of selecting the food service providers each year that he'll never have to wash dishes! Be sure to tell all the volunteers how much you appreciate what they do for the community when you cross paths with them Saturday night. Thank you for that gesture!
The casino games this year have been expanded to include three fun new games, Red Dog, Chuck-a-Luck and Sic-Bo in addition to our Blackjack tables, Roulette and possibly Texas Hold'em. Try them all!
One of the main ingredients that make this night so much fun is the jovial camaraderie among everyone, invigorated by the smiling attitudes of all the volunteers who give their time and energy to serve as dealers, ticket distributors, chip counters and everything else to make your evening fun.
Where else can you have so much fun for such a small cost and help so many deserving charities? Hope to see you there!

Mayor Announces Construction of Municipal Market: to be Replica of Madrid's Market in Spain
JoinUs Magazine
Within days, construction of the Puerto Penasco Municipal market is set to begin. This is part of the efforts to generate investment and associated growth needed as a city with active tourism and Real Estate developments, announced Mayor Ernesto Kiko Munro.
The Mayor indicated the new infrastructure, which will be a replica of the municipal market in Madrid, Spain, will be built in an area located at the junction of the Boulevards Fremont, Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, and the access road to the Las Conchas neighborhood.
He announced the amount of investment for this Mercado Municipal will be estimated and determined by the company selected to develop it, given that the City will provide the land through a public-private partnership plan. This is the same concept used for ongoing construction on the skate park being built in the Ferrocarrilera neighborhood.
He clarified the building will be done under one condition: that rental spaces are first and foremost for local merchants and obviously at accessible rates, so that anyone who intends to establish a business can have access to this new option.
The Mayor stated it was a matter of days for construction on the Municipal Market of Puerto Penasco to begin, estimating completion within three or four months.
Ernesto Munro deemed this a way to advance in defining policies to help new companies and generate more and better jobs, which is essential, since one of the main challenges is to revive Penasco's economy.

Tucson Firefighters and Local Administration Provide CPR Training in Puerto Penasco
In inaugurating a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course led by firefighters from Tucson, Arizona, Puerto Penasco Mayor Kiko Munro reiterated the backing of his administration to strengthen the professionalism of health personnel and members from Public Safety, the local Fire Department, Civil Protection, and the Tourist Assistance Unit. The Mayor explained that the training, which was held at the Penasco Expo Convention Center, derives from the Sister City relationship with Tucson that was renewed on February 2nd of this year. "You have my support, as well as the commitment of this administration, to continue helping to prepare yourselves as these types of courses will allow you to progress", indicated Kiko Munro. Course Coordinator Donna Whitman of Tucson-Mexico Sister Cities remarked that follow-up will be provided for these workshops in the future, and thanked the Mayor for his full support in making this happen. "We'd like to thank Kiko Munro for his concern to train all Fire Department and Civil Protection staff, and for strengthening the bonds of friendship and solidarity", stated Whitman at the event. Similarly, Tucson-Mexico Sister Cities President Frank Valenzuela expressed his gratitude to local authorities for the warmth and sisterhood between both communities. More than 140 men and women from the Fire Department, Tourist Assistance Unit, employees of Seaside Reservations, and service providers from several of the resorts on Sandy beach participated in the CPR training, along with students from the Technological University of Puerto Penasco (UTPP).

Potpourri - Short Shorts of All Sorts!
Sometimes so much is going on in our little slice of paradise by the sea that we can't address the many short subjects with proper attention. To handle the hodgepodge of dangling subject matter, we invented the Potpourri Page. Here are a few "short shorts" to keep you up to date.

City Installing New LED Street Lights
Around 8,000 new lights are being installed in the city at a cost of about a 7 million pesos fund managed by Mayor, Kiko Munro, and Federal Deputy for the District, Everardo Lpez Crdova .
The Mayor and the Federal Deputy toured streets of East Puerto Penasco and San Rafael Colonias, as they will be the first beneficiaries with the installation of the modern lighting devices. The LED technology allows better lighting and ensures a substantial savings in electricity cost for the city.
The Mayor reports that the distribution of new lights in these two Colonias will be only the start of new lights that they plan to install in different parts of the city before the end of this year.

Construction Begins on Second Wind Generator
I reported several months ago that there would be a second wind generator built as part of the ongoing plan for more "green" energy in/around Puerto Penasco. After the story, nothing happened... until now. Construction has begun near the first wind generator and it won't be long before it becomes very noticeable from almost everywhere in town.

Tourist Assistance Agents Continue Training in English Language Proficiency
One of the requirements to be an Agent with the Puerto Penasco Tourist Assistance Unit is the ability to communicate in English. Certainly some Agents have more proficiency and skill in the English language than others, but all Agents are required to continue their education and practice in order to better serve and communicate with our predominately English speaking tourist demographic.

Boy Scouts USA Meets Boy Scouts Mexico in Puerto Penasco
The Boy Scouts of America is a time tested and honored organization that has undoubtedly left a positive mark on vast numbers of kids and young adults throughout the United States. But, did you know that the Boy Scouts are actually active today in more than 212 foreign countries and territories? For over 100 years, Mexico has has its own division of the Boy Scouts and as of very recently, they have some serious help in adding numbers to their ranks. The Asociacin de Scouts de Mxico, Asociacin Civil (ASMAC, Scout Association of Mexico, Civil Association) is the national Scouting Association of Mexico. Scouting was founded in Mexico in 1920 and became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement on August 26, 1926. It was registered to Mexican civil authorities on 24 February 1943. "ASMAC" has approximately 33,509 members. The ASMAC headquarters are located in Mexico City. Yvette Lavin and her husband, Michael Lavin love Rocky Point. They come to visit all the way from Massachusetts. They have also been Boy Scout Troop Leaders in Massachusetts for a couple decades, more or less. Put those things together and we get a fantastic combination - Boy Scouts in Puerto Penasco! Yvette and Michael are Assistant Scout Masters in Troop 185, Wellesley, Mass. and with their help, our local Puerto Penasco Troop is being sponsored by Knox Trail Council, Marborign, Mass, in cooperation with the Boy Scouts of America International Program. Of course, the Lavins did have some local help in getting things organized and working through the details involved in this major endeavor. Enter Barb Olszewski of Adopt-A-Classroom in Rocky Point, and Kory Bonini, local Spanish interpreter and all around proactive charity promoter, and things got done. The Troop also is sponsored by 5 local Community Centers, plus several local Churches and volunteers on both sides of the border. Several local businesses have helped and special thanks goes out to Jose Flores of Boobar. They also asked for a special mention to the local community as a whole and to Sonoran Resorts. During their first recruitment drive, this group of highly motivated volunteers was able to sign up about 300 local kids to the program. This is nothing short of fantastic and it got the attention of both the Mexican Scout Association and the Boy Scouts of America. With the high levels of community support and the high sign-up rate, it will be no surprise to see additional assistance from both of those organizations. Another very special thank you goes out to William and Fabiola Cox who have offered to donate their AOK oceanfront campground, located about 15 minutes from town along the new Coastal Highway, to the Troop for special events. William and Fabiola are also members the Scout Troop committee. The committee is busy making plans and they have indicated that there is ample opportunity to get involved if you have the time and the desire. In the near future, they will be organizing events to train troop leaders and committee members. The hope is that several people, both Americans and Nationals with a knowledge of the program will step up to get involved. So many of us have Scouting experience (even if it was a long time ago), and that experience would be very valuable in helping the program grow and succeed. They are also looking for volunteers with "special skills" to train individuals in specific areas in anticipation of the scouts earning merit badges. You remember merit badges, right? There are over 105 merit badges to choose from so if you have a special skill or talent that will apply, please don't be shy about volunteering. The impact that this program can have on our Puerto Penasco youth can not be overstated. Giving kids the confidence, structure, and skills to succeed in life is exactly what this committee has in mind and they can certainly use your help. If you are interested, or if you have additional questions, please contact Barb Olszewski at rpbarbo@gmail.com.

Mayor Promotes Connectivity via New Bus Routes
Press Release - Translation by Shandra Keesecker
Puerto Peasco, Sonora. May 12, 2016. Mayor Kiko Munro recently met with representatives from the TAP Royal bus line to address details regarding what would be two new bus routes to Phoenix and Tucson.
The mayor explained to Keith Rosenblum from TAP the need to continue promoting connectivity to Puerto Peasco, not just by air but also by land, so that it can be more accessible to visitors from Arizona and from across the globe.
He explained there would first be a daily route between Puerto Peasco - Phoenix, with plans to expand toward Tucson within the short term.
Accompanied by Tourism Director Martn Martnez, City Business Development Director Jorge Valds Flix explained TAP Royal would first present a letter of intent for operations, followed by selecting a spot to serve as their central location.
He added the company had committed to providing first class bus services, offering WiFi, and costs of approximately $40 USD.

Commercial Airline Flights Coming to Puerto Penasco
In a meeting with Fernando Antillon, Director General of the Mar de Corts International Airport, and Alonso Dominguez, Airport Administrator, Mayor Kiko Munro was informed that TAR airlines, based in Queretaro, will begin 3 flights twice a week to Puerto Penasco. The kickoff date for the first flights is currently scheduled to be July 21, 2016. TAR Airlines will be initially flying jets with a capacity of 50 passengers, beginning with the following routes:
Ciudad Juarez> Puerto Penasco
Puerto Penasco> Tijuana
Tijuana> Puerto Penasco
Puerto Penasco> Hermosillo
Hermosillo> Puerto Penasco
TAR airline routes will initially be scheduled for Thursdays and Sundays. Exact times have not been determined as of yet.
This is great news for the growing number of Mexican Nationals who are discovering and enjoying our little paradise but it will also make travel from the USA very convenient. Most major cities have flights to Hermosillo, and the new connecting flight can bring you to Puerto Penasco.
There has recently also been a great addition to the Tijuana airport and the International Border called Cross Border Express (www.CrossBorderXpress.com). This is a closed system to facilitate coming across the border from San Diego to directly enter the airport in Tijuana. No driving, parking, taxis, etc. The airport will reached by simply walking a short distance of about100 meters across the border to reach the Tijuana airport. There, you will be able to board a plane to Puerto Penasco.
Many thanks go to Mayor Kiko Munro and the local Office of Conventions and Visitors in conjunction with the Government of the State of Sonora and the Federal Government for helping to achieve full funding and promoting this exciting new option.
Here are some sample prices gathered by Beverly Arrowood:
Puerto Peasco to Tijuana : $933.20 pesos ($50 us dollars aprox.) Round Trip: $2012.56 pesos ($108 us dollars aprox.) Puerto Peasco to Hermosillo: $1,020.80 pesos ($55 us dollars aprox.) Round Trip: $2,228.60 pesos ($120 us dollars aprox.) Puerto Peasco to Cd. Juarez: $1,132.88 pesos ($61 us dollars aprox.) Round Trip: $2,519.59 pesos ($136 us dollars aprox.) All these flights are only Thursdays and Sundays both ways. For more information on this new airline schedule you can visit the airline website directly at: www.TARMexico.com. This is just one more great step in the continuing efforts to promote tourism in Puerto Penasco. It will certainly open the possibility for more people across the country to visit our city.

The Great Rubber Ducky Race is June 12
The DUCKIES ARE COMING... RELEASE THE QUACKIN...
This is the race that we've all been waiting for. Not an off-road race, a regatta, or even a triathlon. No, it's the annual rubber ducky race. Get ready for excitement and fun while rooting for your duckies (although there is really no way to tell them apart until one of the volunteers looks at the number on the bottom).
The basic premise is that you buy (actually rent) a ducky or duckies and hope they make it to shore sooner than the others. Kind of like horse racing without any stats or studying to do in order to place your wagers. Pretty much all luck.
Of course, all the monies collected will go towards the fantastic Adopt-A-Classroom charity, which helps to supply local schools with the materials and funds needed to function. Some of the schools in town are on a much tighter budget than you can imagine.

Here's a message from Mark and Barb Olszewski, founders of Rocky Point Adopt-A-Classroom Charity:
Thank you so much for supporting our charities in Rocky Point. The Rubber Duckies are now available to purchase for the Great Rubber Ducky Race to benefit Adopt-A-Classroom of Puerto Penasco. We have some great prizes coming up for this event.

Driving in Mexico
by Denise Ackerly
www.ParadiseInPenasco.com and www.PenascoToday.com
Although the traffic laws and most signage are the same as in the US, driving in Mexico can challenge even the most experienced drivers out there. There have been many times I've stomped the floor with my imaginary brake pedal as a passenger, and "white knuckled" it as the driver.
One of the biggest challenges you'll face driving in Peasco is the signage, or lack thereof. Most signs look the same as in the US. Well, usually. The red octagon stop sign can be very faded, so it may not be as noticeable. Or the sign got removed and there's only a pole remaining. Or the word "ALTO" (STOP--think HALT) is just painted on a telephone pole. Missing any of these could put you in danger of an accident or getting stopped by the police. Your best defense is slowing down as you approach intersections and looking at the opposite corner. If they have a stop sign, you do too, even if it's not actually there. Don't be fooled into complacency when you see locally-plated cars do a rolling stop. "Murphy's Law" is that your US plated car will get a ticket.
Another VERY important sign to be aware of is the "tope" yellow caution sign. Topes (pronounced TOE-peh) are speed bumps that can range from small 2-inch high bumps to get you to slow down before an intersection to large mountainous bumps that can ruin your suspension if you hit them too quickly. Just like stop signs, tope signs are not always still there, or were never well marked in the first place. There are three of them on the Sandy Beach road, with varying degrees of signage. Between the topes, railroad crossings, and potholes, there is a thriving business for tire repair shops (Llanteras) that you'll see all over town.
There are some non-symbol signs and customs that you also need to be aware of. For instance, if the local car in front of you on the highway puts on his left-turn signal, it may mean one of a few things: he is turning left, he is telling you it's okay to pass, or he simply forgot to turn it off. Don't assume it's safe unless he moves toward the shoulder, as a double indication for you to pass. ATV's are permitted on the streets and desert (but not most beaches), and people are permitted to ride in the back of pickup trucks. Always be a defensive (and sober) driver. Driving under the influence is heavily enforced and punishable. Please don't ruin your vacation with an accident or visit to a Mexican jail. Taxis are plentiful and cheap in the big picture.
One last tip is to limit your driving at night. There are stray dogs roaming around the city streets, and coyotes and wildlife that cross the highways in search of food when the air cools after sundown. Though there are many road and lighting improvements happening, it's not the same as the US. There are lots of blind spots, unmarked curves and topes, medians that aren't quite where you'd expect them to be, and a severe lack of reflective tape /signage.
Stay safe and enjoy our fabulous little town.

'Our Last Chance to Save Vaquita Marina'
Study finds just 60 of the porpoises left, down from 97 in 2014
The vaquita marina, a porpoise found only in Mexican waters, is headed for extinction according to the latest estimate of their numbers.
The International Commission for the Recovery of the Vaquita and Semarnat, the Environment Secretariat, used acoustic devices to identify surviving vaquitas in the Sea of Corts between September and December last year. The results were released yesterday: they found 60.
That figure is down from the 97 identified in 2014, which triggered a 1-billion-peso federal program primarily designed to pay fishermen not to fish. The vaquita has been a victim of the shrimp and totoaba fisheries, showing up as bycatch in gillnets.
The totoaba is also an endangered species but its swim bladder is a delicacy in China, and fetches a good price - as much as US $5,000 in the U.S.
Omar Vidal of the Mexico office of the World Wildlife Fund believes there are fewer vaquitas than the 60 counted in the survey. He told The Associated Press he believes the porpoise can be saved but "this is clearly our last chance."
He said the Mexican, U.S. and Chinese governments need to take urgent and coordinated action to stop the illegal fishing, trafficking and consumption of totoaba products, and called on Mexico to ban all fishing in the upper Sea of Corts, home to the vaquita.
Illegal fishing is believed to have continued despite funds allocated from the billion-peso program to pay for monitoring vaquita habitat. The program, initiated just over a year ago, has also been criticized for distributing unequally the compensation payments to fishermen.
Alejandro Olivera of the Center for Biological Diversity said most of the 2,700 fishermen received between $40 to $220 per month but some got as much as $63,000.

Gas, Diesel Prices to be Freed Sooner?
About 1,000 Pemex stations have said they'll switch to Gulf.
Allowing gas stations to set their own prices could come sooner than planned in the opinion of Gulf Mexico chief executive Sergio de la Vega, Reuters reported recently.
The Finance Secretariat is scheduled to discontinue setting prices at the beginning of 2018 and until then, says de la Vega, it doesn't make sense for private companies to import fuels, which they have been allowed to do since last month.
That change came nine months early after the federal government decided to modify the schedule. De la Vega believes it's possible the government will do the same for the liberalization of gasoline and diesel prices.
"Right now, prices aren't liberalized and there's no certainty that the imports will be competitive. They could be very cheap or very expensive," he told Reuters.
Gulf plans to open 100 gas stations this year in 18 cities, beginning with five in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla and the State of Mxico, just outside Mexico City, in July.
De la Vega said about 1,000 Pemex franchises have said they will switch over to Gulf.
The company expects to have a distribution network in place by the end of 2017. Until then it will have to buy from Pemex and pay to use that company's pipelines and storage facilities.

Don't Call it Mezcal: Mexico May Force Artisanal Producers to use a New Name
Miguel ngel Partida pours an early morning slug of mezcal into a hollowed-out bull's horn, and watches bubbles form around the rim. From the way they rise, he estimates his homemade liquor has 50% alcohol.
"If it doesn't do this, it's not mezcal. It's another alcoholic beverage," he says at his home in Mexico's western Jalisco state.
Partida and his family have made mezcal for five generations, enduring the Mexican revolution, the Cristero rebellion and various attempts by governments - and the tequila industry - to rein in renegade mezcaleros. They even survived losing the legal right to use the name "mezcal" and are obliged to sell theirs as "agavate distillates". But new rules will now require them to label their liquor something completely foreign: "Komil". The word, from the indigenous Nahuatl language, means "an intoxicating drink" - but few mezcaleros had even heard of it until late last year, when Mexico's finance ministry released new regulations governing denomination of origin (DO). For Partida, it's all an attempt at doing away with artisanal producers, wiping out a way of life and the ancestral knowledge of making mezcal "not written down in any books". "Mezcal has been persecuted since its origins," he says. "They've always wanted to control and regulate us. It happens every 20 to 30 years." NOM 199 promoters say the new rules aim to improve quality, make mezcal more marketable and do away with adulterated drinks. Officials from the Mezcal Regulatory Council (CRT), which oversees the DO, did not respond to interview requests. The new rules emerge as the once-despised liquor has moved to the mainstream, winning fans with its smoky and earthy flavors, origins in oft-forgotten indigenous communities and small-scale production in backwoods stills. Over the past decade, bars known as "mezcaleras" have popped up in hip Mexican neighourhoods, while bartenders have developed a range of mezcal-based cocktails. The success could be short-lived, however. Mom-and-pop mezcal makers and their allies are accusing regulators of trying to industrialize and standardize an artisanal activity, along with appropriating the name, "Mezcal" - just as it starts carrying some commercial cachet. "This is attacking the small producers and depriving them of the name that they've had for 300 years," says Ana Valenzuela, a biologist, who studies agave along with tequila and mezcal. "They want to own mezcal as if it were a trademark ... because mezcal now has value." Mezcal is made in most of Mexico's 31 states, but the DO introduced in 1994 excludes many traditional mezcal-making areas. If fully implemented, NOM 199 would force producers in those areas to call their products "Komil" - a name many are finding tough to swallow. Adding insult to injury, mezcaleros from outside the DO would also be prohibited from listing the ingredients - varieties of agave and maguey - on the labels of their products. Full Story:

Fresh, Authentic, Roasted Salsa Verde
Every Mexican household has their own slight variation of fresh salsa verde. The basics are tomatillo, jalapeos, onions, garlic and cilantro. Super easy. Super tasty.
Yield: about 2 cups ___________________________________
INGREDIENTS
1 pound tomatillos 2 jalapeo peppers 2 cloves of garlic, peeled a medium onion, quartered, plus ⅓ cup finely chopped onion, divided 1 cup chopped cilantro, thicker stems removed first ⅓ to cup water kosher or sea salt, to taste teaspoon ground cayenne pepper, optional ___________________________________ DIRECTIONS
1. Remove the husks from the tomatillos; discard husks. Rinse fruit well to remove sap.
2. Cut the stemmed tops off the jalapeos then split them in half and, using a spoon, scrape away the seeds and veins. This is where the main heat lives. If you don't mind the heat, leave the peppers whole.
3. Lightly grease a griddle or skillet, rubbing excess off with a paper towel. Place on medium heat. When it's hot, place the tomatillos, peppers, garlic and onions on the hot surface. Allow to blister, turning vegetables over with tongs to soften and slightly blister as much surface as possible. The peppers, onions and garlic will soften and blister the fastest. After about 5 minutes, remove the onions, garlic and peppers to the bowl of a blender. Continue roasting the tomatillos for another 5-8 minutes. Optional, carefully slice the tomatillos in half to accelerate the roasting. Once the tomatillos have started to soften and are just starting to release their juices, remove them to the blender.
4. Allow to cool a few minutes then add ⅓ cup of water, place the blender lid on loosely, holding it in place with a kitchen towel and pure until just slightly chunky to smooth depending on personal preference. Add more water if a thinner consistency is desired.
5. Pour the salsa into a bowl, add salt to taste.
6. Stir in the cilantro and the chopped onions (feel free to add these to the puree if you don't like the chunky cilantro and onions. Adding them after the fact adds texture back to the salsa).
7. If more heat is desired, add the cayenne, to taste.
8. Place in an airtight container - preferably a glass jar - and store in the refrigerator for up to a week. Add a squeeze of lime juice to freshen as needed. ___________________________________
As a Side Note: A Brief History on Some of Our Favorite Mexican Foods
Salsa was sold in the Aztec market places. Salsa, the Spanish word for sauce, is uncooked and sometimes pureed until chunky, smooth, or chopped. Large red tomatoes, tomatillo, chipotle {a staple in the Aztec diet} and the avocado are found in the modern salsa, and are the same core ingredients used in the past. The tomatillo is a fruit that dates back to at least 800 BC, the word meaning round and plump. The Aztecs domesticated it, and when the Europeans came to Mexico, they documented the local foods and often confused the names by shortening the words. Though never popular with Europeans, it thrived in Italy. Today a relative of the fruit is common in the US. Tomatillo, a member of the night shade family, provides tart flavor in many different green sauces. The Portuguese aided the spread of the chili pepper plants. Thought the earliest mention was in 1542 when a German herbalist, Leonhart Fuchs, described and illustrated several types of peppers. Though for people of Europe, the history of the pepper began in the late 15th century, when Colombus brought the peppers home. There is archaeological evidence that peppers were in use since 5000 BC. The term enchilada is first referenced in the US in 1885. Yet the concept of tortillas being used as a wrap can be clearly linked to the Aztecs. The word enchilada means "in chile." Pre-Columbus is how far back the Tamale can be traced. The Friar Bernardino de Sahagun documented that the Spaniards were served tamales by the Aztecs in the 1550's. Other foods that we associate with Mexican cuisine, are not traditionally so. The Flan was discovered in Medieval Europe. And ceviche is an Inca discovery, eating their catch of the day raw with only a few seasonings. It wasn't until the late 15th century when Native American chefs of Ecuador and Peru began to add the citrus fruits with the South American fish, and creating the dish that we know today. Flavors from around the world have influenced Mexican dishes. The same can be said about Mexican traditional favorites affecting other countries menus. In just about every culture you look at, you can find a hint of Mexico.

5 Steps To Understanding Por vs. Para
In any language, prepositions seem to have no logic to them. Often, the rules just have to be memorized. For example, in English, we say at home vs. in the house. Besides the subjunctive mood, perhaps one of the most challenging concepts for non-native Spanish speakers to master is understanding when to use por and when to use para - both translating to for in English. However, when it comes to the Spanish por and para, you're in luck! There are multiple rules to help you know which one to use. 1. It's more than a translationEven though your trusty Spanish-English dictionary will list for as the definition of both por and para, their use goes well beyond the direct English translation. It's all about context. Even in English, while we may use for in multiple instances, it can convey a different meaning. Examples: Estoy buscando aquel libro para ti. (I am looking for that book for you.) Estoy buscando aquel libro por ti. (I am looking for that book for you.) In the first sentence, I am looking for that book to give it to you. In the second sentence, I am looking for that book on your behalf (because you may be too busy to go to the bookstore). It's a subtle difference, but understanding this in English will help you understand when to use por and when to use para in Spanish. 2. Understand Cause vs. EffectA trick to understanding when to use por and when to use para is knowing which is associated with cause and which is associated with effect. Basically: por → cause para → effect This might sound a little confusing so let's use some examples. Imagine you're working at a company with Alvaro, and you both have the same boss, Marisol. To talk about your boss, you would both say: Trabajo para Marisol. (I work for Marisol.) In this instance, to say I work for Marisol means the same thing as saying I am looking for that book. Marisol and the book are the effect of the situations. Now, if Alvaro was to call in sick and you had to cover for him on a project, you would say: Trabajo por Alvaro. (I work for/on behalf of Alvaro.) In this instance, to say I work for Alvaro is the same as I am looking on behalf of you. Alvaro is the reason why, the cause, for you to be working. In general, para is used when a statement calls for in order to and por is used when a statement calls for on behalf of. This might be a little difficult to understand at first, but just think about why the action is occurring. Are you working to produce results for your boss (para)? Or are you working on behalf of your sick coworker (por)? 3. Differentiate Travel vs. DestinationIn Spanish, por and para can be used to describe travel or motion. A simple rule to remember when to use the the two propositions is: Por refers to travel/motion through a place or location. Para refers to the destination of a journey. Examples: Salimos por la puerta. (We left through the door.) Viajamos para el Caribe. (We travel to the Caribbean.) In the first example, la puerta is how we go to the destination - what we go through. In the second example, el caribe is my destination - what we go to. 4. Know Duration vs. DeadlineThis is probably the easiest rule to master. When talking about how long it took to accomplish something, or how long it took to go somewhere, use por. But when talking about a deadline for an action, use para. Examples: Conduje por dos horas. (I drove for two hours.) Estos deberes son para el lunes. (This homework is for Monday.) Whether it's doing homework, driving, walking, or traveling, whenever a statement refers to duration, use por. When a statement refers to a deadline, use para. 5. Review the first four rules!Understanding por vs. para is one of the best ways to improve your Spanish proficiency. With these rules, you will for sure be on your way to having a better grasp of one of the more challenging concepts for non-native speakers. Think that you've got it down?
