Last Issue of the Current Year
It's also the last issue that I will be editing. Time to move on to other adventures and opportunities. Thanks for putting up with my ramblings (that's to those few of you who have actually read this introduction to the newsletter).
Don't forget to sign up for the CSI Southwest Region Conference in El Paso, Texas (see below). And don't forget my advice last month on how to convince your supervisor that you should attend.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

EL PASO BOUND IN 2014
David A. Bishton, RA, CSI, CCS, CCCA, President Southwest Region
The CSI Southwest Region is pleased to be meeting again in El Paso, Texas this year. We are a region with nearly 700 members and spanning 560,000 square miles of the great American Southwest. Additional CSI Chapters are located in Albuquerque, Colorado Springs, Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and Tucson. We are grateful for the hard work of the members of the CSI El Paso Chapter for hosting our annual educational and leadership event in 2014.
CSI is a dedicated organization of professionals representing a uniquely wide spectrum of the construction industry. We are dedicated to major cooperative efforts for knowledge and excellence in construction with over 50 categories of member occupations that include owners, architects and engineers, manufacturers, specification writers, contractors, educators, and a wide variety of other consultants and specialists.
What is our purpose? To advance building knowledge and the education of project teams, to improve facility performance.
CSI is well known for its information formats and standards widely used throughout the industry for over 60 years. More are being developed and modified each year as new forms of technology change the profession at a rapid pace. CSI's certification programs are also highly regarded among employers and practitioners. The CDT certificate is a comprehensive overview of construction industry terminology and practices, while CCS, CCCA, and CCPR certifications demonstrate detailed expertise in specialized areas of technical writing, project management, and product representation.
What does this event mean for El Paso and visitors from across the Southwest in June 2014? First of all, CSI membership is not required for attendance. All in the construction industry are welcome and are valuable assets! The CSI Southwest Region Conference is a unique opportunity to meet a wide variety of building professionals in one place. Attendees will come from many different markets across the Southwest. Education offerings abound amid a wide ranging Building Products Exposition. A unique presentation will feature a new construction venue to accommodate space travel for private industry and individuals, as well as for NASA. Spaceport America is less than 150 miles from El Paso. Opportunity is also offered for a special 50% CSI membership rate for a limited time during and after the conference.
Come and enjoy the beauty and spirit of El Paso, and find the benefits that CSI can offer to your career. We appreciate your interest and participation.

Santa Fe Opera Prepares $23 Million Renovation
Santa Fe New Mexican, The (NM)
Everything looks flawless on the stage of The Santa Fe Opera -- the scenery, the props, the costumes. For music lovers, the whole experience, from the mountain views, occasional lightning displays and world-class musical performances, is matchless.
But off-stage and behind the scenes, things are far from perfect. The dressing rooms used by opera divas like Susan Graham, Natalie Dessay and Joyce DiDonato are reminiscent of summer camp. There's a grim communal shower and a minimum of privacy in the toilet area. Inside the scene shop, there isn't room to assemble an entire set. That has to be done on the open stage, outdoors on the deck or sometimes in Stieren Hall. Because there's no dedicated paint shop, crews have to improvise. In the costume shop, there's not enough room between the work tables to even roll a rack of clothes, and there are only two tiny fitting rooms. Bolts of stock fabric are stored outside in barrels covered with a blue tarp. |
