Monsters and Mayhem

In Western culture, dragons are evil creatures who crave destruction and hoard treasure, whereas in Eastern culture dragons don't suffer such a bad rap. In a mythological (and hence psychological) context, dragons have a different meaning, i.e., they represent a part of ourselves (ego) that is preventing us from moving forward. Here, the term slay the dragon takes on a different meaning. How often have you said something like "I wish I could write an article for the CSI Construction Specifier but I can't write well enough," or "I'd like to do what so and so is doing but I could never do that!"? We all have our dragons to slay.

WHAT'S YOUR ROI?

Jori Smith, CSI, CCCA, Vice-President Southwest Region

Return on investment, commonly referred to as the "ROI", is a business term with which we are all familiar.  What if we take the concept of ROI and apply it to Volunteerism?  What have you invested in your CSI membership, and what has been the return?  I believe that it's important to be convinced you are investing your time wisely, and to be fully committed to doing so.

I've asked a number of our CSI Albuquerque chapter members this question recently, and received a variety of enthusiastic answers.  One respondent, David Vaughan, CSI, CCPR, agreed to be interviewed on camera, and you can hear him answer that question for yourself by viewing the video linked in this issue of SW Breezes.

The roadside scenery along U.S. Interstate 15 through Draper, Utah, about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City, is not unlike that in other metropolitan areas of the West-filled with signs for fast food restaurants and motels. But the owner and builder of the new Living Planet Aquarium, slated to open in December, are hoping the new facility west of the interstate among the strip malls and low-profile office parks will stand out like a fish out of water.

I'm from here, but I left to study marine biology. I'm just fascinated by life in the ocean and always thought it would be great to have an aquarium here in Utah," says Living Planet CEO and founder Brent Andersen. Beginning in 1998 with a few small exhibits...
