SW Breezes Editor's Ramblings
After taking the CDT and CCS exams, I had a few complaints and gripes about the tests themselves (some of these complaints were actually justified!). So I decided to confront the issue head-on and volunteered for the CSI Education Committee to work within the system to bring about quality changes. At our first meeting in Alexandria, VA, I discovered a lot of hardworking people, many of whom shared my frustrations and goals. Among other tasks, we are concentrating on the development of test questions, but not just made up from thin air. The need for questions in a particular subject area has been researched, and questions are screened and double-checked before approval. That means no "true or false" or "Answer A, B and D only" (don't you hate those?). More on my quest in future issues.

SO WHAT ARE YOU DOING AFTER THE CONSTRUCT SHOW?
David A. Bishton, RA, CSI, CCS, CCCA
President CSI Southwest Region
A great CSI experience awaits in Nashville this month on the outset of FY2014. It will be just one of many outstanding offerings this year in CSI, to be sure. It IS the main event in learning and sharing the expertise that is CSI as we re-energize our mission: To Advance Building Information Management and Education of Project Teams to Improve Facility Performance.
A caucus meeting for Southwest Region members will be held, as will dozens of opportunities for learning and fun activities. Southwest Region members Liz O'Sullivan of Denver and Joy Davis of Albuquerque are making education presentations. The host chapter event is at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Some people might even consider this to be fun: we (yours truly & Vivian Volz of the San Francisco chapter, are starting an annual CONSTRUCT fun run on Friday morning, bright and early @ 6:30 a.m. Details w ill be at the Nashville host chapter booth, and on Twitter #runCSI.
We are glad that our chapters in the Southwest Region have long sponsored many of their officers each year to attend some portion of CONSTRUCT. The Southwest Region will help its 4 officers with the major costs of attending. The experience of meeting and talking over CSI leadership issues with members from across the country is invaluable to all of us! Others are supported by their employers and some wholly pay their own way. A weeklong trip to Tennessee is a big commitment of time and expense - a big thanks to those who attend and those who support. To those who attend due to the commitment of others, please make it a top priority to share the benefits and knowledge gained with your support system.
What might this sharing look like? Depending on your chapter or business, it could be:

Charles T. Sewell - Obituary
As the Tucson Chapter CSI gets ready to celebrate its 50th anniversary, we are saddened to share the news that our longest serving and founding member Charles T. Sewell (age 91) passed away on May 3, 2013.
Charlie was a Tucson native, married to his wife Patricia, the love of his life for 57 years. He loved travel, Dixieland jazz, and American Civil War history. He served as a signalman in the US Navy during WWII, after which time he attended college on the GI Bill, and later went into the painting business with his father.
"Charlie" as he was affectionately known by us all, along with his wife Pat and brother, Hope Sewell founded Sewell Painting Contractors in Tucson. For the 42 years they were in business, owners, architects, and contractors were in agreement that Sewell Painting set the standard for what a professionally painted project should look like. Charlie often quipped that competitors might beat his price but few could ever match the quality of his work -- and he was right!
For those of us who knew and were fortunate enough to work with Charlie, it should be said, that he was a superb craftsman, and perfect gentleman. He was simply a delight to know. His cheerful presence and always good humor will be sorely missed.

MEMBERSHIP - DID YOU KNOW? We are impressed when CSI members not only are involved with their home chapter, but also make it a point to be part of others in the Region or elsewhere. That kind of commitment is noteworthy. As of this month, we have over 30 members who have joined 2 chapters, and 8 who are members of 3. Many of these are manufacturer representatives, and others are specifiers and even a retired member. Peter Kremm, CSI of Sherwin-Williams is a member of 7 chapters - Denver (home), Albuquerque, Amarillo, El Paso, Lubbock, Pikes Peak, and Salt Lake City. We thank Peter and Sherwin-Williams for their commitment to the value of CSI. All multiple chapter members - we salute you! Building Construction Industry Leadership in the Southwest. |
