PMI Educational Foundation Liaison Newsletter

2 November 2012
Greetings!

vancouver pin
Last month, PMIEF participated in PMI's 2012 North America Leadership Institute Meeting (LIM) and PMI® Global Congress 2012- North America in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Our PMIEF Board Members and staff are excited to report that more PMI members than ever now know about the Foundation's efforts to promote project management for social good.

In fact, fewer people this year asked "What is PMIEF?" and more wanted to know how best to access our array of educational resources and expert volunteers. We recognize and appreciate all of your hard work that has helped drive increased awareness of who we are and what we do. Without you, PMIEF would not be able to implement our programs and to deliver our resources to communities across the globe!

This month's newsletter includes a summary of and slides from PMIEF's standing-room-only LIM presentation, which provided attendees a blueprint to successfully leverage project management for social good at the local level.  We hope this will both inspire and encourage you to continue to share PMIEF's work with others.

Regards,

PMIEF's LIM Session in Vancouver Inspires Participants

Walter Ginevri, PMP, President of the PMI Northern Italy Chapter (NIC), and Bernie Trilling, Learning Advisor for PMIEF, drew a standing-room-only audience for PMIEF's LIM session during which they discussed the importance of integrating project management into school curricula.

Bernie, who also co-authored 21st Century Skills: Learning for Life in Our Times, began the session by identify the kinds of skills today's students need to ensure 21st century success.  He discussed the ways in which project management should be recognized as an essential life, learning, and professional skill.  Since, as he put it, "everyone in education is being asked to do more with less," an understanding of project management knowledge and concepts can support teachers, administrators, states and ministries of education, and of course, students across the education continuum.  "Project management is a powerful tool for education," said Bernie.

These statements correspond with what both PMIEF and PMI members have believed for years: project management belongs in education and adds value to teaching and learning.

Bernie's remarks caused the audience to think deeply about how they can put this information into action to impact education and also created a perfect segue to Walter's presentation. He discussed the "how to" of creating project management programs for youth and explained the methods he and his chapter employed to implement PMI NIC's program and competition for

students ages 6 - 11. Since 2006, the chapter has utilized it's "Kit for Primary Schools," which Walter developed to teach young children project management skills.  The materials have since been translated into seven languages for use on multiple continents. He has recently updated the kit to interface with white board technology, which he demonstrated during the session.

Interestingly, a university president in attendance to the LIM session commented, "These are the same concepts I am teaching in my graduate-level project management class," which further demonstrates how learners of all ages can benefit if schools integrate project management into the curricula.

PMIEF thanks our presenters for participating in our session and inspiring all of us! Please be certain to visit the PMIEF website to access the NIC resources and a copy of Bernie and Walter's LIM Presentation.

New! PMIEF Liaison Training from PMI LIM - Vancouver, Oct. 2012

These slides were used for an in-person training at LIM last month.  They provide an up-to-date overview of PMIEF and the Liaison role and inspired great group discussion and the sharing of ideas.

Quarterly Getting Started webinar trainings provide background information about PMIEF and the Liaison role. These training sessions will be hosted by PMIEF staff and others from within the PMI community who are excited to share their experience and advice.

Click here for a recording of a recent "Getting Started Webinar." Please email us if you'd like a copy of the slides without the recording.

The trainings generally include a guest presenter, who may be a PMIEF Liaison or chapter leader, to share his/her experience. Other future quarterly trainings will address topics including:
