Update #19

9:00am
Good Morning to Everyone -
Update: Work continues in Staten Island and in our region. Things are getting more organized, but there is still a great deal to do. There is an ongoing need for parish-based response teams to come help (see below). If your parish can send a team, please contact me at 917 301-0267 or email me at
sharding@mindspring.com.
Parish-based Response Teams: Several parishes have now sent their response teams to Staten Island to help with whatever is needed. Their ministry has been appreciated and they have had a direct impact on some of those affected by Sandy. We continue to ask that all parishes in the Diocese continue to organize a response team to help in the recovery effort. Once your team has committed to a date, please contact me with the date, number of volunteers, any particular skills that your team is bringing, and I will make sure that you're connected with a site that will need you.
Long-term structures: At the Diocesan level, we are continuing to develop our understanding of long-term needs within our Diocese and at the regional level so that we can put the most effective structure for long-term recovery in place.
Self-Care for Caregivers: The timeline for recovery from Sandy will be a marathon and not a sprint. Those providing care need to take care of yourself as well as of everyone else. Pace yourselves, be compassionate with yourselves, and honor the time you have set apart for your self and your family.
Workshop on Caring in the Aftermath and Webinar on Long-Term Recovery:
The Diocese is hosting the workshop Providing Care in the Aftermath/Including for You. These workshops are intended for anyone providing care in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, and will be co-led by the Reverend Stephen Harding and a representative from Episcopal Relief and Development. The dates and locations for the workshops are as follows - please join us!
These presentations are for a time to come together over lunch, hear a presentation on care in the aftermath and share in the conversation. Due to dietary considerations, everyone is asked to bring their own lunch. For more information, please call Stephen Harding at 917 301-0267; to RSVP, please call the Church in question. We look forward to seeing you there.
