 Get Inspired!

Our team at Parrish Construction has been delighted with the latest kitchen we've been working on. "It's a fun one," says Stacey Smith, Lead Cabinetmaker. "It's complicated, but we love complicated," he says.

Certified ktichen designer, Eric Balstad, agrees
. Captivated by the challenge, his list of exceptional features for this distinctive project includes delicate door mouldings and highly-specialized cabinets. However the focal point of the kitchen is the detailed island. "It's more like a piece of furniture that serves as an island," says Balstad.

With lathe turnings and custom arch pieces, the island stands on feet instead of a standard base - giving the impression that it's a proper table instead of just a functional island. "It has lots of curved elements, which are not typical for an island," says Balstad.

In addition, the kitchen features remarkable green soap stone counter tops with an ornate Cove Dupont profile on the edges. A spectacular copper and brass hood has a shape consistent with the Victorian era, which is the inspiration for the kitchen's design.

"It's going to be beautiful," says Balstad. And it most certainly will be--Eric's standards are pretty high! Check out some reviews of our work from our past clients and give us a call today to schedule your own personal FREE consultation with one of our remodel experts.

 Summer Kitchens

Original summer kitchens were cooking areas outside the home to double cooking space during harvest and to limit heat gain in the non-air conditioned house.

The modern "summer kitchen" addresses these concerns as well as some more noble and pleasant pursuits.

Becoming increasingly popular, the modern summer kitchen can include a gas grill, wet bar and refrigeration unit among other things.

Smartly designed for entertaining and relaxing, there are benefits for the home and the environment. Check out or latest blog for Benefits & Features of Outdoor Summer Kitchens.SummerFAQ

Greening Up

The planet's surface is more than 70% water but the actual usable water on the planet is about 2%. With the burgeoning population, water is an issue and water usage in the home is a big demand.  Lowering water uses in the home makes good sense economically and environmentally.

The single biggest water user in the home is irrigating lawns and vegetation. Colorado often has little rain and doesn't allow gray water, so valuable premium treated water is used to water plants. Consider xeriscaping and strategic plant placement. The second biggest water use is in toilets. Low flow toilets have gotten a bad rap because the earliest versions sometimes required more than one flush, technology has improved now and special features such as dual-flush and pressure assist toilets can make the smaller water use flushes more efficient and very worth the investment.

There are over a dozen features that can be added to create a water-efficient home. Check out the rest of our blog, Be Water Wise: Conserving Water in your Home.

VELUX Sun Tunnel

VELUX Sun Tunnel Skylight

VELUX is known for creating better living environments with their wide range of roof windows & skylights. At Parrish Construction, we love the innovative VELUX Sun Tunnel sklylight by designer Ross Lovegrove (VELUX).

VELUX calls it a: "designer lamp that uses the sun as a bulb, making it a sustainable alternative to electric lighting."

Some skylights are notorious for leaking and requiring maintenance. VELUX has developed an alternative that brings in natural light with minimal disturbance to the roof and maximum reliability.

The VELUX Sun Tunnel is a light tube that uses refractors to bring in a surprising amount of light considering the minimal surface area it requires for installation. It accommodates any roof pitch and brings more natural light with easier

Aging-In-Placeinstallation. What's more, if you install one this year you are eligible for tax credits.

Revamping Your Kitchen for Continued Use

One point of comfort and control in the home is the kitchen. Losing the ability to cook and access refreshments at any hour of the day can be demoralizing for an elder. Issues include safety, accessibility and ease of use. Our designers can talk about specific options for your home, but here are some design ideas to get you started:

  • Widened doorways and hallways to accommodate wheelchairs, walkers and helpers
  • Strategically placed removable cabinets to allow space for wheelchair access to counters
  • Raised dishwasher to be accessible by wheelchair
  • Lowered microwave oven and dishwasher drawers for accessibility
  • Cooktop with staggered burners and front controls to prevent reaching over hot burners

Preparing in advance for decreased mobility is a wise choice in remodeling. Check out more ways you can "Age in Place" by reading our blog with More Tips on Revamping Your Kitchen for Continued Use.

Larry Parrish, President at Parrish Construction is a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS), as awarded by NAHB, (he is also CR, CGR, GACP certified) so we often design with an eye toward continuous occupation.
