Synergy Success E-Zine, OCTOBER 2013
"The road of life twists & turns and no two directions are ever the same.
Yet our lessons come from the journey, not the destination."
~Don Williams Jr. |
Greetings!
Greetings to YOU and a Warm Welcome to our strong community of high-achieving women who intend to thrive amidst the challenges of work and life while showing grace under pressure.
There are times when the clock seems to stop abruptly, reminding us that we're on God's divine schedule. This week has been one of those for our family. 6 days ago my father-in-law had a double heart valve replacement, and although the surgery itself was a success, for unknown reasons he still remains unresponsive on life support in a cardiac intensive care unit.
Many life scenarios throw us into an uncertain "meantime" where things are happening that we can't control, explain, or understand. The meantime between losing a job and finding another, the breast biopsy and the results, the positive pregnancy test and a full term delivery.
Of course the meantime can be positive, like between an engagement and the wedding, but it can also seem like things are either falling in on us or falling apart. Somewhere along the way, we learn to avoid things that are uncomfortable, so by default we Retreat into helplessness, or React out of panic. We distract. We eat. We smoke. We drink a glass (or three) of wine before dinner. We watch hours of stuff that means nothing to us.
When we do this, we lose, because we miss out on what the experience is here to teach us. There's actually another choice altogether, which is to Respond by replacing fear with faith, and worry with action.
See, the meantime can be a rich opportunity to grow personally and professionally if we have a resilient mindset and effective tools to manage our emotions in healthy ways.
Here are 2 mindset shifts that I've found especially useful in transforming my struggles into stepping stones. I hope you find inspiration and guidance that will be helpful as you are waiting in your own life:
Ask "How" instead of "Why"
Let go of the struggle to understand why things happen as they do. Saying "poor me, why is this happening to me, why do I deserve this?" will only keep you feeling like a victim which is sure to keep you stuck. Instead, say with an air of curiosity "how I can find the positive in this and get back into taking inspired action? You see, "Action is the antidote to despair" (Joan Baez). The choice is yours, but I've found the way forward with the least amount of suffering is to accept the reality of what is and keep asking to be shown how I can benefit from each new situation. Our brains are programmed to answer questions. You'll receive answers if you stay focused and pay attention. Answers may come to you through a flash of insight, your intuition or a hunch, something that is said to you, or through a person that you meet. When you catch yourself asking "why" flip it to "how?" and feel your confidence rise.
Believe that things happen for you not to you
When you believe everything that happens to you is for your highest good and holds a lesson or a gift, it can serve to deepen your faith and keep you focused. Even if you can't see them right away, stay open to the lessons your life experiences are teaching you. This resilient point of view reminds you that you're seeing just a snapshot but in time you'll see the bigger picture. At unexpected moments, things often happen to reveal why you needed to experience the hard times. The following poem helps us to understand there is a higher purpose to things we encounter, and although an outcome may not be what we asked for, our best interests are always being considered:
I asked for strength and God gave me difficulties to make me strong.
I asked for wisdom and God gave me problems to solve.
I asked for prosperity and God gave me a brain and willingness to work hard.
I asked for courage and God gave me dangers to overcome.
I asked for love and God gave me troubled people to help.
I asked for favors and God gave me opportunities.
I received nothing I wanted
I received everything I needed
My prayer has been answered ~ unknown
May you choose to see your challenges for the gift they are and as you look for ways to transform your meantime into a positive experience, be reassured that "However long the night, the dawn will break"~ African Proverb
Until then...Many Blessings!

The Guest House Poem
by Rumi
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness.
Some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
Who violently sweep your house empty of is furniture,
Still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice
Meet them at the door laughing
And invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes.
Because each has been sent
As a guide from beyond. |
Synergy Success Story!
Billie Jo Fulk
"Where do I start? Christina came into my life at a time where I needed her most. I was lost in so many ways!
She taught me how to think about things in a whole new way. She taught me how to find out who the real me is. She helped me dig deep into myself and bring out who I really wanted to be and what I really needed in life and deserved. She always made me feel like a stronger person. Now I am that stronger person.
She made me see a new way of how to see the world and things and people around me. And thinking positive was hard for me sometimes, but Christina made me see that thinking negative only made me feel worse because those things never happened. (Just Thinking in a whole new way, will change everything.) Why waste your time thinking about all the bad that could happen, when you could think about all the good that could happen?
I have found so many doors to open and Christina lead me to all of them. I never could have imagined that things in life, in whatever it is could be so much better if you would just think about them in a different way! The mind is a powerful thing!!!
I will walk through my path leaving all the negativity behind me...and if I am walking and it tries to push itself upon me, then I'll walk a little faster...leaving it in the dust.
I'm so thankful for Christina and I really believe that God brought her into my life and I'm blessed to have her as a close, forever friend!"

Inspirational Song by Josh Waller
While I'm Waiting
This song serves as a compass to guide my personal philosophy, and keeps me focused on how I want to respond,
regardless of the circumstances.
The Serenity Prayer
God Grant me the Serenity
To accept the things I cannot change
Courage to change the things I can
And wisdom to know the difference
