SNEFA Forge-In at Jim Smith's Forge
April 10, 2015
By Jim Smith, CJF
Tim McPhee, CJF, and Tim Bolduc, CF, assisted by Tyler Marshal, were the stars of the show, demonstrating forging techniques needed for the upcoming contest that we will put on at Mhyre Equine Clinic in Rochester, New Hampshire on May 2, 2015. We are fortunate to have such willing talent to help right here in this area. Tim McPhee is on the AFA team for the second time, Tim Bolduc made the cut at the convention, but not having finished the written portion of the CJF, is not on the team. Tyler Marshal is an artist as well as being very accomplished in the forge.
Fifteen farriers and one veterinarian were here from 3:00 - 9:00 pm having a great time with rigs set up, being tutored as they worked and after each demo. Tyler brought a deer antler that he forged in a day and a half with the aid of a wire feed welder. What a beautiful replica it is! There were various real antlers around the shop to compare, making it obvious how realistic it is. Our clinicians were using many tools that they have made, and described how to make them.
We had invited three local veterinarians in our attempt to advance relationships. Taren Pearson, DVM expressed her appreciation for the invitation and the opportunity to network with local farriers and observe their skills.
Certification is coming to the forefront as farriers realize the need to advance their standing in the profession. As awareness of the skills required and the relationships developed in the process of becoming certified are realized by equine professionals and owners, certification will become worth the effort, and more in demand.
