Hank McEwan Obituary
Hank McEwan had an extensive career, both here and in California. He went to school under Ralph Hoover, with Scott Simpson and Doug Butler. He taught in San Diego for a number of years before returning to British Columbia. About ten years later, he began teaching at Kwantlen. He retired from teaching in 1993.
He was one of the founding members of the Western Canadian Farriers Association and the American Farriers Association. A long-time supporter of certification for farriers and international competition, he was inducted into the International Farriers Hall of Fame and voted British Columbia's Horseman of the Year.
He never considered himself a farrier, "just a horseshoer." There are few farriers of repute that never came in contact with Hank. His style was direct and forceful. He had an influence on the industry beyond what one would expect of someone located in the Northwest corner of the continent. Because of his simple, uncomplicated way of describing what he thought and saw, he helped farriers everywhere understand hooves, horses and shoeing. He was the king of the rocker toe. I don't think I ever heard him say a horse had a toe too short, but he surely became agitated when he saw a horse with a long run forward toe.
His passion in life was his daughter and riding in the mountains. No trail ride was too long or weather too bad.
Happy Trails Hank.

IPFA/ISU Veterinary College Certification/Clinic

The First Annual Iowa Professional Farriers Association (IPFA)/Iowa State University (ISU) Veterinary College Joint Farrier/Veterinarian AFA Certification/Equine Hoof Care Clinic was held on March 26-29, 2015 at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ames, Iowa. The event was a resounding success with 28 farriers, four veterinarians and 40 veterinary students in attendance.
Eighteen farriers accepted the challenge of AFA Certification with two completing the Certified Journeyman Farrier (Brandon Kucera, CJF of Iowa and Ike Roth, CJF of Pennsylvania) and two completing the Certified Farrier (Cale Danielson, CF, and Brandin Schrader, CF, of Iowa). Examiner Pat Burton, CJF, was assisted by Mark Thorkildson, CJF, also an Examiner/Tester, and Testers Ian Bevington, CJF, Matt Merrill, CJF, Craig Stark, CJF, Lynn Pennick, CJF, and Jon Snider, CJF. The general consensus was that this dream team of Examiners and Testers provided a great atmosphere in an outstanding facility for testing.
Pat Burton, CJF, stayed over as clinician for the Hoof Care Clinic, discussing and demonstrating the use of Modern Shoeing Materials. Kevin Kersh, DVM discussed Caudal Heel Pain vs. Navicular Syndrome and Treatment Options. An exciting Wet Lab followed with multiple teams of two veterinary students and one farrier per team, diagnosing the condition and applying a shoe to a cadaver limb. Special thanks to Vettec and Equicast for providing materials for the Wet Labs.
Jon Snider, CJF, judged the forging competitions with a large group of 18 competitors. Annabelle Westley, CF, of Nebraska, won both the Novice High Point and the Eagle Eye, while Cale Danielson, CF, of Iowa, claimed the Division 2 Eagle Eye and Brandin Schrader, CF, of Iowa, claimed the Division 2 High Point Award.
ISU Resident Farrier, Doug Russo, CJF, coordinated the combined efforts of the members of the IPFA and the ISU Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, whose hard work provided an outstanding educational forum.
