Introducing Sarah Akierman
President

Sarah Akierman started her term as President of the Graduate Students' Association at the University of Calgary on May 1, 2013. Sarah is responsible for being the voice for the all graduate students at the University of Calgary.

Sarah graduated from the University of Calgary with a BSc in Biological Science and a BA in Philosophy in 2010 and is currently enrolled in a MSc program. Sarah's MSc program is in Biological Sciences and her research interests lie in the role of gut microbiota in the cause of Crohn's Disease. During her program she received the Dean's Graduate Performance Award in recognition of superior performance in a MSc program in Cell, Development & Physiology.

In complement to her academic interests, Sarah is a big proponent of student engagement within the community, being a representative and a member of Oxfam Canada since 2007. In addition to her role as a President for the GSA, Sarah serves as a board member on the Alumni Association and the West Campus Development Trust. Prior to this role, Sarah was Co-Chair of the GSA's Bylaws Committee and Co-Chair of the GSA's Inclusivity Committee.

If Sarah isn't in the office or the lab, you will likely find her outside taking advantage of living so closely to the beautiful mountains; most likely rock or ice climbing.

No cost to the student

University of Calgary graduate students are now members of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce at no cost to the student.

  • Customized, complementary leadership and management training in skills areas such as project management, project evaluation, communication, industrial networking, commercialization and entrepreneurship

Hosted at a supervising professor's home university, each Mitacs Elevate PDF fellow will collaborate with the professor and an industry partner on a research project of mutual interest. Fellows are expected to spend approximately 50% of their time interacting with their industrial partner onsite at the company's facilities within Canada.

For outstanding achievement in postsecondary research

As seen in UToday, May 3

Due to the enormous financial success of The Last Defence Lounge (LDL) over the past year, the long-standing MacEwan Student Centre establishment will be getting an exciting makeover this summer.

"The prosperity of the LDL has been very encouraging," says outgoing Graduate Students' Association president, Franco Rizzuti. "I'm pleased to be leaving the new executive with the lounge in such good shape."

The LDL closed its doors on Friday, May 3 to begin extensive renovations. The revamping will focus on an expansion of the kitchen, which will help to accommodate the large amount of regular patrons to the restaurant. The kitchen will also be updating much of their equipment.
