Critical Importance of Copyright Compliance
A message sent on behalf of the Provost
The University of Calgary is one of 20 Canadian universities that have opted out of the Access Copyright tariff that permitted use of materials from their repertoire without prior permission. Two thirds of community colleges, as well as most school boards in the K-12 sector across Canada, have also opted out of their version of the tariff.
It was anticipated that this action would result in close scrutiny by Access Copyright of all post-secondary institutions and that legal action might be initiated. At the beginning of April, Access Copyright filed suit against York University claiming they have authorized copies that are protected by copyright and, therefore, these copies should be subject to the tariff. These new circumstances remind us of the importance of continuing vigilance in the area of copyright compliance.
It is critical that we continue to adhere to the University of Calgary's policy, Acceptable Use of Material Protected by Copyright.
We are continuing to enhance the university's copyright procedures: for example, we continue to add features to the Ares copyright management software to simplify procedures for instructors who require documents in multiple places. Integration with the Bookstore text ordering system as well as the Library Reserves system is also in progress. In addition, all course names and numbers in each semester, along with names of the instructors, are now regularly uploaded to Ares. This enables copyright staff to liaise immediately with individual instructors with any questions or concerns about their course readings.
The Libraries and Cultural Resources Copyright Office is ready to receive your spring, summer and fall term materials for review and copyright clearance. Clearance can usually be completed within a few days of submitting your course outlines, reading lists or other instructional materials. In the meantime, please continue to send your requests for all course readings to copyright@ucalgary.ca and visit the Copyright website.
On behalf of the Copyright Committee, thank you for your timely attention to, and assistance with, all requests for copyright compliance.

As seen in UToday, May 3
Due to the enormous financial success of The Last Defence Lounge (LDL) over the past year, the long-standing MacEwan Student Centre establishment will be getting an exciting makeover this summer.
"The prosperity of the LDL has been very encouraging," says outgoing Graduate Students' Association president, Franco Rizzuti. "I'm pleased to be leaving the new executive with the lounge in such good shape."
The LDL will be closing its doors on Friday, May 3 to begin extensive renovations. The revamping will focus on an expansion of the kitchen, which will help to accommodate the large amount of regular patrons to the restaurant. The kitchen will also be updating much of their equipment.
