Sarah Akierman knows she has big shoes to fill. As incoming Graduate Student Association President, she and her team will be taking over from Franco Rizzuti and Joey Windsor on May 1.

"They've made it so they are accessible and graduate students know they can come and talk to them at Graduate Representative Council and at the offices" Akierman says. "Students know they can just show up or email and they''ll get a prompt response. Franco and his team have set such a precedent of what it means to be the GSA and our team has to keep that up."

A master's student in biological sciences, Akierman is collaborating with the Alberta IBD Consortium, looking into the cause of Crohn's Disease. She is not new to the GSA, having served as a department representative on the Graduate Representative Council, a member and co-chair of the Governance Committee, co-chair of the Inclusivity Committee, and as GSA representative on the Faculty of Science Teaching and Learning Committee.

Glad of the foundation he has laid

Franco Rizzuti is not sure what the future holds for him, but he knows it will be a big change from the last two years.

Rizzuti has been the Graduate Student Association (GSA) President for two years while working toward his master's of arts degree in the Faculty of Education with a specialization in Higher Education Leadership, focusing on Physician Leadership Development. In July he will be entering full-time medical school for the MD portion of the Leaders in Medicine combined degree (MA/MD) Program.

"I'm looking forward to the change in pace... probably some free time, and the opportunities that affords as I begin medical school" he says. In addition to GSA he's also been on the provincial Alberta Graduate Council, serving as Chair this year after filling the post of Chief Financial Officer in 2011. Rizzuti served on the GSA bylaws committee and finance committee prior to starting his terms as president.

Some of the themes include collaboration inside the classroom, outside the classroom, collaboration among the disciplines and collaboration in inquiry.

CALL for RESEARCH CHALLENGES

Our Annual CPSC Industry event is scheduled for Thursday, May 9th from 8 am to 1 pm (including light breakfast and lunch) this year.  This is a CALL for RESEARCH CHALLENGES.

A "research challenge" is a broad range of questions all having in common that:

-They are originated from (one of ) your real-world business projects

-Content-wise, they somehow have a link to one of the CPSC competence areas listed here...

-You believe that some portion of research would allow you to better address the original problem.

For each challenge you have in mind, please fill out the attached form and submit toruhe@ucalgary.ca.

We will have a dedicated session during our Industry Day event where we will discuss the results and offer ideas on how to proceed with the challenges. One idea would be to apply for an NSERC ENGAGE grant (with the key idea of fostering collaboration between industry and academia). See here...

Please submit your challenges until May 2nd.

Please also indicate if there is any confidentiality concern talking about your challenge.

Challenges can also be formulated on-site during Industry Day.

May 29-June 1, 2013

The conference is designed to provide intellectual stimulation, opportunities for networking, sharing of learning, and building of community for all individuals, whatever their background, who have an interest in ethical issues relating to health, the environment and the life sciences. All those interested in contributing to the bioethics conversation - from beginners to experts alike - are encouraged to attend for inspiration, renewal and discovery in one of Canada's most breath-taking natural settings!

As seen in UToday, May 3

Due to the enormous financial success of The Last Defence Lounge (LDL) over the past year, the long-standing MacEwan Student Centre establishment will be getting an exciting makeover this summer.

"The prosperity of the LDL has been very encouraging," says outgoing Graduate Students' Association president, Franco Rizzuti. "I'm pleased to be leaving the new executive with the lounge in such good shape."

The LDL will be closing its doors on Friday, May 3 to begin extensive renovations. The revamping will focus on an expansion of the kitchen, which will help to accommodate the large amount of regular patrons to the restaurant. The kitchen will also be updating much of their equipment.
