A Message From President Elizabeth Cannon
A message from President Elizabeth Cannon in last week's issue of UToday:
The University of Calgary received a draft Letter of Expectation from the Government of Alberta late on Friday, March 22. The letter outlines the expectations the government has of the University of Calgary, following the tabling of the provincial budget on March 7.
The executive leadership team is currently reviewing the letter and has shared it with the Board of Governors. The University of Calgary's letter is posted and you can find the letters to Alberta's post-secondary institutions on the government's website.
This is a draft letter. We have been invited to share our feedback during a meeting with the Deputy Premier and Minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education, Thomas Lukaszuk, and all presidents of Campus Alberta on April 11. As we prepare our response, we want to include input and ideas gathered as part of a broad consultation with the Board, Senate, campus community, and business and community leaders. The response we develop to the Letter of Expectation will be shared with the campus community.
I invite students, faculty and staff to share their feedback by April 3 at: www.ucalgary.ca/president/letter-of-expectation
There is much to consider and discuss as we work through the details of the Letter of Expectation. We are committed to working with the provincial government, and with our communities both inside and outside the university, in order to achieve the best possible post-secondary system in Alberta within a challenging fiscal framework.

Call for Input and Suggestions From the Task Force to increase Entrepreneurship-Oriented Graduate Education
Grad Student Input
Hello Fellow Graduate Students,
This is a call for input and suggestions from the Task Force to increase Entrepreneurship-oriented Graduate Education and Postdoctoral training at the University of Calgary.
The goal of the task force is to create a concrete plan to present to the university on how we can better incorporate entrepreneurship/business education into our University of Calgary graduate and postdoctoral programs. Ideally, UCalgary will start students thinking about/learning about entrepreneurship from their first day here and educational opportunities will be open to all students from undergrads through to post-docs.
Please provide feedback by April 5th to: vpfs@gsa.ucalgary.ca |

Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer
June 22 - 23
It is now time to make a decision as to how much fun you want to have cycling through Southern Alberta while raising money to find a cure for cancer.
Our team is registered as University of Calgary Dinos and we are open to additional members. You do not have to be affiliated with the University of Calgary, but you do have to be keen to have a good time.
Each rider needs to register. At the time of registration you will be asked whether they want to join a team. The answer is "Yes, I want to join the University of Calgary Dinos." The registration fee is $75 if you register on-line, but they have reduced the registration fee to $50 if the registration is done by telephone: 1-888-624-2453.
We are currently raising funds for the general fund, but you can designate a specific cancer if you would like to.
Once you register, and when you send out your request for sponsorship, it is important that you ask for the support of our team, as opposed to you as an individual. This allows us to spread the effort across team members, and to get credit as a team vs. an individual. ie: we are expected to raise $2500 per rider. As a team of 10 that is $25,000 and they do not care if one rider raises all the money.

Important Update on Copyright at the University of Calgary
Dru Marshall
Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
The University of Calgary now has a Copyright Policy in place and the expanded Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) Copyright Office has been clearing our own copyright permissions through a new copyright management system - Ares - for some months. The university's Copyright Committee is pleased about our progress, and thanks faculty and staff for their patience and support of the changes in copyright management over the past academic year.
The final step in the implementation of Ares is to provide a web interface for instructors to input citations, have copyrighted materials reviewed and then uploaded to a new Learning Management System (LMS). Once the LMS is selected, the copyright management piece will be integrated with the roll-out of that system.
In the meantime, please continue to send your requests for all course readings to copyright@ucalgary.ca and visit the Copyright website. The LCR Copyright Office is ready now to receive your spring, summer and fall term materials for review and copyright clearance.
Once again, on behalf of the Copyright Committee, thank you for your timely attention to, and assistance with, all requests for copyright compliance.
Dru Marshall
Provost and Vice-President (Academic) .
