Liam completed his BA (Hon) at the University of Calgary in 2009, and recently completed his Master of Planning degree through the Faculty of Environmental Design.

In September, Liam will begin his Master of Environmental Design, focusing on intermodal surface transportation, and is keenly interested in both regional and urban 'triple bottom line' issues.

Building on co-curricular roles and volunteering time spent in his undergraduate degree and first Master's, Liam is excited to join the GSA Executive Team for 2013-2014.

Liam is a motorcycle enthusiast and has been able to teach many others this daring hobby. He has also hiked the West Coast Trail five times.

Graduate Students' Association Honors Excellence
May 1, 2013

With 50 esteemed individuals nominated and over 90 people in attendance, the Graduate Students' Association (GSA) held its annual Supervisory Excellence (SEA) and Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA) the morning of May 1, at the MacEwan Conference Centre.

The TEAs and SEAs allow graduate students to nominate exceptional teaching and supervisory staff within the University of Calgary.

"The event was a great success and very well attended. It was wonderful to award these well-deserved nominees in front of their peers, and let them know they are thoroughly appreciated by the GSA," says Liam Cummings, vice-president (academic).

This year's award winners (in no particular order):

               - Stefania Forlini (Teaching Excellence Award)

               - Nathalie Jette (Supervisory Excellence Award)

               - Judi Powell (Exemplary Administrative Support - Support Staff)

              - Susanne Carroll (Exemplary Administrative Support - Administration)

Sarah Akierman, president (GSA) says, "There was a large amount of impressive applicants this year that made the decisions quite difficult. We are very honoured to have so many applicants who are all deserving."

Respected guests included Lisa Young, dean and vice-provost (graduate studies) and Lynn Taylor, vice-provost (teaching and learning) as well as performances by the B. Johnny Summers Trio.

Due to the enormous financial success of The Last Defence Lounge (LDL) over the past year, the long-standing MacEwan Student Centre establishment will be getting an exciting makeover this summer.

"The prosperity of the LDL has been very encouraging," says outgoing Graduate Students' Association president, Franco Rizzuti. "I'm pleased to be leaving the new executive with the lounge in such good shape."

The LDL closed its doors on Friday, May 3 to begin extensive renovations. The revamping will focus on an expansion of the kitchen, which will help to accommodate the large amount of regular patrons to the restaurant. The kitchen will also be updating much of their equipment.
