2017 ELUM Professional Development Program
Next Level Leadership:
Building personal and organizational capacity
January 12-14, 2017
The Four Seasons
Denver, CO

Please save the date to join us in Denver, CO this coming January, for the next ELUM professional development program, Next Level Leadership: Building personal and organizational capacity. Our Colorado hosts have put together an excellent opening with a presentation on inclusive leadership for an alumnae and Fellows dinner. The program opens the next morning with a panel of national leaders invited by and including ELAM facilitator Lily Marks to address what next level leadership looks like. In addition, you will have the opportunity to join workshops on communication skills, building ELAM/ELATE-like programs at home, and using systems engineering to improve health care.

Expect registration to begin in late summer, and keep an eye on the ELAM Edge and our website for more information in the coming weeks.

We hope to see everyone there!

Fortune, May 31, 2016:
In April, Swiss pharma giant Novartis made an unexpected announcement. Christi Shaw, the company's U.S. country head and president, was stepping down "for personal and family reasons."
That phrase is often code for internal corporate strife, personnel clashes, or failure to perform. But in Shaw's case, the explanation was as personal and familial as it gets: Her older sister, Sherry, 51, was suffering from multiple myeloma, or bone marrow cancer.

AAMC CFAS News, June 3, 2016:
An opinion essay in Britain's Guardian titled, "Why Aren't There More Women in Science? The Industry Structure Is Sexist" explores possible reasons why the proportion of women as lead authors of scientific papers has declined in recent years, despite the fact there are more women in some disciplines than men. A possible explanation includes earning disparities for women in science who have children, along with a host of other factors that the author says leads to an overall sexist environment.

Bohnet, a professor and the director of the Women and Public Policy Program at Harvard Kennedy School, joined us on the Knowledge@Wharton show on Wharton Business Radio on SiriusXM channel 111 to talk about the importance of data in addressing bias and ways to design for change.

The New York Times, June 4, 2016:
IT was going to be the biggest presentation of my life - my first appearance on the TED Conference main stage - and I had already thrown out seven drafts. Searching for a new direction, I asked colleagues and friends for suggestions. "The most important thing," the first one said, "is to be yourself." The next six people I asked gave me the same tip. ...
But for most people, "be yourself" is actually terrible advice.

Fast Company Leadership, June 5, 2016:
We often hear that authenticity is crucial for leadership but forget a big reason why: it's the best way to communicate.
