We are extremely excited to announce the selection of ELAM's 22nd class of Fellows. Chosen from a pool of more than 100 applicants, this exceptional class of 54 women hails from institutions across the United States and Canada. The work for this incoming class begins in June with online assignments and community building activities. They meet for the first time at the Chubb Hotel and Conference Center in Lafayette Hill, Pa., on September 17, 2016. Phyllis Beemsterboer, M.S., Ed.D. (ELAM '98) was awarded the Oregon Health & Science University 2016 Faculty Senate Award for Leadership at a luncheon on May 10, 2016. This award recognizes a faculty member who leads by example and demonstrates substantial contributions towards achieving the missions of the University.
 
Sharmila Makhija, M.D., M.B.A. (ELAM '13) was honored at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Women's Division 62nd Annual Spirit of Achievement Luncheon on May 17, 2016.
 
Susan Mayne, Ph.D. (ELAM '09), was interviewed for a piece on the May 20, 2016 CBS Evening News, New food labeling serves up more info to consumers.
 
Kathryn Schmitz, Ph.D., M.P.H., has been appointed Associate Director of Population Sciences at the Penn State Cancer Institute in Hershey, PA, and a professor of Public Health Sciences at Penn State.
 
AAMC CFAS News, May 13, 2016:
The AAMC Council of Deans has named its latest five fellows to the COD Fellowship Program, including faculty from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, University of Florida College of Medicine, University of Mississippi School of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, and University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. Geared to senior faculty, the program is intended to enhance the development of future leaders in academic medicine.

A study in BMJ reveals that in the last couple years, there has been a gender gap in the names of researchers listed first on research papers, with women being underrepresented. Commenting on the study, Kaiser Health News reports that name placement is vital to a researcher's career. "Dr. Carolyn Lam, a cardiologist and faculty member of the Duke-NUS medical school in Singapore, said getting top billing isn't just about ego. The number of times you nab that 'first author' spot on a research paper shapes how you're evaluated at work-everything from tenure possibilities to pay. 'This is our livelihood,' Lam said. 'It's important.'"

AAMC CFAS News, May 20, 2016:
A JAMA study found that two-thirds of female biomedical researchers reported "gender bias in professional advancement" and one-third reported experiencing sexual harassment. STAT News reports on the study, which was based on a 2014 survey of over 1,000 biomedical researchers who had received career development grants from NIH between 2006 and 2009.

And finally, "it's not something you're likely to try early in your career," according to an article in Slate, but a handful of witty scientists have been known to take a stand with editors and coauthors to incorporate a complicated pun or joke somewhere within an otherwise serious paper. In rare cases, it may even open a moonlighting possibility. The article notes a physicist who doubles as a stand-up comic and longtime actress and UCLA-educated neuroscientist, Mayim Bialik, PhD, who plays a neuroscientist on The Big Bang Theory and prior to that, was best known as the inimitable Blossom.
