ELAM News to Know
ELAM at ADEA - a wonderful reception
ELAM staff members Diane Magrane, Christel Perkins, and Rosalyn Richman greeted dental ELUMs, current Fellows, and guests Monday afternoon, March 14th, at the ELAM-sponsored reception in Denver. The event was an opportunity to bring together those who were in Denver for the American Dental Education Association's annual session and prepare for the January 2017 ELUM professional development program. If we had awarded a prize for the most attendees from a single school, the University of Michigan School of Dentistry would have won. Dean Laurie McCauley was joined by ELUMs Margherita Fontana, Lynn Johnson, and Carol Ann Murdoch-Kinch, along with several guests. The evening prior, staff was joined by members of the University of Colorado ELUM program planning team who are putting together a program of practical and innovative sessions for January 12-14, 2017.
The reception, held at The Four Seasons, proved to be a delicious taste (pun intended) of what might be on the menu for next January's 2017 ELAM Winter Session and Alumnae Professional Development Program. We all enjoyed home-made ice cream and an assortment of toppings. If that doesn't tempt you to put the dates of January 12-14 on your calendar, then we don't know
what will!

Harvard Business Review, March 23, 2016:
Roughly 85% of corporate executives and board members are white men. This number hasn't budged for decades, which suggests that white men are continuing to select and promote other white men.
It is well known that people tend to favor and promote those who are similar to them - and that this in-group bias is problematic because it reinforces stereotypes and inequality. However, while it is a common tendency, not everyone is allowed to advocate for their own group. Sometimes when women and minorities promote their own group, it garners criticism from others.
