Honoring Our Founders: A Tribute to Page S. Morahan

One very special event during the ELUM professional development program in January was a gathering of nearly 100 ELUMs to celebrate all that Page Morahan has done for the ELAM program and the ELAM community at large. Patricia Cormier (ELAM Co-Founder) presented for us the story of how Page founded the program; Lois Nora (ELAM '97), Sally Shumaker (ELAM '98), Roberta Sonnino (ELAM '98), Laura Schweitzer (ELAM '99), and Rosalyn Richman (Special Assistant to the Director of ELAM) described how Page has advanced and supported women leaders with her personal attention, and how her commitment to the cause of advancing and supporting women leaders in higher education has made a difference through her scholarship and advocacy.
Thank you Page for your years of service and commitment to the cause of advancing and supporting women leaders in academic medicine.
[And thank you to Roberta Sonnino for the pictures of this event, and also the pictures of the ELUM program from last week's Edge!]

Articles of Note

The New York Times Opinion Pages, February 12, 2016:
I HAVE spent much of my career as a diplomat. It is an occupation in which words and context matter a great deal. So one might assume I know better than to tell a large number of women to go to hell.

AM Rounds, February 23, 2016:
In our roles as senior women faculty at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, we wondered if our experiences and those of our colleagues in achieving full professorship could be described and analyzed in a way that would be helpful-perhaps even inspiring-for the much larger group of younger women currently moving through the challenges of academic medicine. [Note the research article mentioned in the blog, Silent Bias: Challenges, Obstacles, and Strategies for Leadership Development in Academic Medicine-Lessons From Oral Histories of Women Professors at the University of Kansas, Academic Medicine: Post Author Corrections: February 16, 2016.]

Fast Company, March 1, 2016:
Being constantly connected may keep you from getting fired, but making time for deep work is what will get you promoted.

Inside Higher Ed, March 2, 2016:
Underrepresented faculty members face many challenges that differ from those majority faculty experience -- challenges that are escalated, not alleviated, after winning tenure, writes Kerry Ann Rockquemore.

Inside Higher Ed, March 4, 2016:
Study finds students are more likely to use certain words of praise when describing professors who are men or who are in fields with few female and black scholars.

The New York Times Sunday Review, March 4, 2016:
OVER the past two decades as a professor, I've grown thousands of plants, studying how their biology shifts in response to our changing environment. Soon I'll begin to design and build my fourth laboratory; I'll teach classes and take on more staff members, as I do every year. Like all professors, I also do a lot of extra jobs for which I was never trained, such as advising former students as they navigate the wider world. Last year, after one of my most talented students left to start her next adventure, she would text me now and then: "This is such a great place," "I am learning so much here" and "I know this is where I am supposed to be."
Then, a month ago, she wrote and asked me what to do.

Fast Company Leadership, March 8, 2016:
Getty Images shares how showing both men and women in non-sterotypical roles can have a real impact on expectations.
