Olimpia Meucci, M.D., Ph.D. (ELAM '12) has been appointed Deputy Director of the recently established Clinical & Translational Research Institute (CTRI) at Drexel University College of Medicine.

 

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Council is pleased to announce that Lesley Regan, M.B.B.S., M.D. (ELAM '11), has been elected to the post of Vice President, Strategic Development.

 

Black Health Magazine, a quarterly healthy living publication has released its Top 15 Most Influential African American Medical Educators in its 6th Annual Commemorative Black History Month issue. The list includes three ELUMs: Alma Littles (ELAM '10), Chief Academic Officer, Florida State University College of Medicine; Anne Taylor (ELAM '02), Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons; and Hannah Valantine (ELAM '06), Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Leadership, Stanford School of Medicine.

 

ASPPH Friday Letter, February 7, 2014:

Northwestern Study: Most People Would Share Health Info for Sake of Research

According to a new report co-authored by Northwestern Medicine scientist Dr. Melissa Simon (ELAM '14), vice chair of clinical research in obstetrics and gynecology, associate professor of preventive medicine and medical social sciences, 94 percent of adult social media users with a health condition would allow for the dissemination of their health data - shared anonymously - to help clinicians improve care. The findings were recently published on the Institute of Medicine's website.

A new report has been released in the United Kingdom concerning the number of women in science careers and in research leadership positions. The report, "Women in Scientific Careers," is the product of the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee. According to a Nature summary, the panel "points the finger at universities" contending that they "are devolving their responsibilities to deal with this issue down to the level of research groups" and thus "failing in their obligation."

Special Call for Proposals: Faculty Diversity and Inclusion in Academic Medicine

The AAMC Group on Diversity and Inclusion (GDI) is pleased to announce a call for proposals for scholarship on faculty diversity and inclusion. Manuscript proposals are due by March 3, 2014. Click here (pdf) for more information.

 

The 2014-2015 COD Fellowship Program is accepting applications, February 14 to March 31, 2014. The program is designed for senior faculty, including department chairs and assistant and associate deans, who are interested in pursuing deanship in the near future. Key components of the program involve selecting and visiting at least two Dean Mentors; being introduced to the strategic activities of the Council of Deans; participating in COD Administrative Board meetings, the COD Spring meeting, and other professional development opportunities specific to deans; and completing a Leadership Project that addresses a challenge of importance at his or her institution.
