ELAM is now accepting applications for its 2014-2015 class through our online application process. We ask that you please share this information with colleagues you think would be a good candidate for ELAM, and also through any relevant listservs or groups of which you are a part. More information on the application process is available in our brochure, and also on our website. Applications are due by January 16, 2014, but we are encouraging applicants to get their applications started ASAP!
Applications are also now open for the Executive Leadership in Academic Technology and Engineering program (ELATE at Drexel) - a program modeled after ELAM but tailored to women in the STEM fields. We encourage you to distribute information about this program to your colleagues in these fields. More information about the program is available in our brochure and on the program website. Applications for ELATE are due January 16, 2014, but we are encouraging applicants to get their applications started ASAP. Please contact us with any questions!

AAMC CFAS-News, December 11, 2013:
Baylor College of Medicine has named Dr. Alicia D. H. Monroe (ELAM '07) as senior dean of education and senior vice president of academic affairs and faculty development, a new leadership position overarching all four schools of the College. Dr. Monroe currently is the chief academic officer and vice dean of educational affairs at University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and is a professor of family medicine.
University of Utah pediatrician Carrie L. Byington, M.D. (ELAM '08), has been named associate vice president for faculty and academic affairs for the school's health sciences campus. Dr. Byington, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine, has served as vice dean for academic affairs and faculty development for the School of Medicine since July 2012. In her new position, she will oversee faculty and academic issues for the entire health sciences and its Colleges of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health.
AAMC CFAS-Chairs, December 17, 2013:
In an essay posted on the Wing of Zock blog site, Dr. Joanne Conroy, (ELAM '98) AAMC Chief Health Care Officer, discussed pay-for-performance programs. She wrote, "...there is an incredible amount of scientific evidence that says these types of incentives are ineffective and even demotivating for creative, conceptual, complex work." She posed some important questions regarding the use of financial incentives in the health care sector.
The University of Zurich has appointed Professor Kathleen B. Digre (ELAM '00) (University of Utah) as the first Hedi Fritz-Niggli visiting professor. She will conduct research and teach at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zurich during the spring semester 2014.
Deborah Helitzer, Sc.D. (ELAM '10) shared with us that she received the University of New Mexico's Health Sciences Center (UNM HSC) Population Science Research Excellence Award on October 16, 2013. The winning faculty were nominated by their colleagues for the award and selected through a rigorous peer review selection process by the HSC Research Excellence Award Committee. Elements of the research accomplishments that were considered for this award include: High impact publication record; Creative/novel research approach; Consistent funding; Extramural service including: committees, chairing symposia, editorial responsibilities in the field and a Track record of successful mentoring. Deborah also noted that there were four awards given that day and all of them went to women!
We received the following note from Adina Kalet, M.D., M.P.H. (ELAM '10): Please join me in celebrating my new book - co-edited with Calvin Chou of UCSF and including 34 authors from many academic disciplines Remediation in Medical Education: A midcourse correction, covering the topic of physician competence and addressing incompetence.
Catherine Lynch, M.D. (ELAM '13) asked us to share information on a Women's Health Fellowship being offered by University of South Florida. This new fellowship is a result of Catherine's Institutional Action Project!
Irina Petrache, M.D. (ELAM '14) has earned the Harrington Discovery Institute at University Hospitals Case Medical Center's Scholar-Innovator Award.
Lisa A. Tedesco, Ph.D. (ELAM '97), will be receiving the American Dental Education Association's 2014 William J. Gies Award for Outstanding Achievement - Dental Educator.The Gies Awards will be presented March 17, in conjunction with the 2014 American Dental Education Association Annual Session & Exhibition, taking place March 15-18, in San Antonio, TX.

5th ADEA International Women's Leadership Conference Call for Papers Deadline for Submissions: February 28, 2014
The call for abstracts for poster and oral presentations is now open for the 5th American Dental Education Association (ADEA) International Women's Leadership Conference (ADEA IWLC), taking place September 14-16, 2014, in Barcelona, Spain.
Global leaders will gather at the 5th ADEA International Women's Leadership Conference to foster global alliances and share leadership strategies that women can use to improve oral health, and overall health, in communities through the world. Dental educators, practitioners, health researchers, policy makers and business leaders in the health sector worldwide will learn skills and share strategies through plenaries, working groups and skills-building sessions.
Posters and oral abstracts will complement conference themes. The deadline for submissions is February 28, 2014.
