Maryland Launches Public Health Critical Race Praxis Institute

The University of Maryland School of Public Health's Center for Health Equity (M-CHE) is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for the inaugural Public Health Critical Race Praxis Institute, scheduled for February 17-19, 2014. The Institute will be a three-day intensive workshop  focused on how best to utilize Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Public Health Critical Race praxis (PHCRP)  to help eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities. Some of the nation's premier theorists and practitioners will lead a series of didactic and interactive presentations, small group think tanks, and cultural experiences designed to expose how race and racism in contemporary American society operates in a social and economic context fueling persistent discrimination toward racial and ethnic minority populations and contributing to their premature morbidity and mortality. "Our aim is to raise awareness and increase the capacit y of a new generation of health disparity scholars committed to achieving health equity for all," said Dr. Sandra Quinn (ELAM '07), principal investigator and member of the Institute's faculty leadership team.

Columbia and Washington Dean's Honored for 2013 AJPH Paper of the Year

A paper co-authored by Dean Linda P. Fried (ELAM '97), Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, and Dean Howard Frumkin, of the University of Washington School of Public Health, has been recognized for excellence as a 2013 Paper of the Year by the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH). "Aging, Climate Change, and Legacy Thinking," which was published in AJPH in 2012, connects two of the major public health issues of our era - the aging of the population and the health effects of climate change - in a hopeful way, emphasizing the desire of older adults to leave an intact world for their children and grandchildren. They therefore may be a resource for addressing climate change. The third co- author is Dr. Harry (Rick) Moody of AARP.

"Love, Work, and Social Defenses": The Challenges of Creating Work/Life Balance in

Modern Organizations

Love and work are the cornerstones of our humanness.
--Sigmund Freud

Though no one disputes Freud's observation that love and work are central aspects of the human experience, many of today's organizations consider members as only workers, demanding incredible amounts of time, energy, and commitment. And although the popular press has focused on the consequences of long work hours for mothers, in reality both men and women are struggling with how to meet the demands of work while also cultivating families, relationships, and passions outside the workplace.  What are the roots and consequences of work/life conflicts? How can our interventions help create organizations that allow people to flourish both inside and outside the workplace?

We invite you to join us in an exploration of these issues at the 12th Annual ISPSO New York Regional Meeting on November 1st and 2nd, 2013 from 9:00am to 5:00pm at the William Alanson White Institute, 20 West 74th St., New York City.
