Keeping in Touch - the ELUM online directory
Did you know that ELAM has a searchable online directory of ELUMs? Alumnae can log in to our secure site at www.icela.net to update contact and demographic information as well as to search for program graduates via the ICELA Community Web Portal. Staff use this information to stay in touch and make sure that alumnae receive news from the community. We also compile aggregate data that shows the impact of the fellowship and the alumnae community, and publish it in our research and reports such as ELAM Fast Facts. Please contact us with questions about the portal at ELAM@Drexelmed.edu.

Quote of the Day
Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful, lest you let other people spend it for you.

ELUM News
AAMC CFAS-News, January 28, 2014:
Ann Bonham, Ph.D. (ELAM '02), AAMC Chief Scientific Officer, authors a quarterly e-mail newsletter on key issues affecting medical research. The new issue of her Research Perspectives newsletter has been posted on-line.
ASPPH Friday Letter, January 24, 2014:
BU Study: Public Housing Residents Bear Disproportionate Burden of Poor Oral Health
Residents of publicly-supported housing - public housing developments and rental assistance units - were less likely to have had routine preventive dental care and more likely to have experienced serious oral health issues resulting in tooth loss compared to other residents, a new study by the Partners in Health and Housing Prevention Research Center (PHH-PRC) at the Boston University School of Public Health shows. The study, which appears in The Journal of Urban Health, discloses a serious gap in oral health care for an already vulnerable population, especially seniors living in public housing. Dr. Deborah J. Bowen (ELAM '10), professor of community health sciences at Boston, the study's principal investigator, and director of the PRC, said oral health affects "all parts of our overall health, including mental health, self-confidence and self-esteem. It even affects the way others perceive us. "This work isn't just about telling people they need to floss. It's about preventing a wide range of chronic diseases and improving self-confidence and mental health."
Dr. Carol A. Lefebvre (ELAM '06), Interim Dean of the Georgia Regents University College of Dental Medicine, has been named Dean.
Anne C. Mosenthal, M.D. (ELAM '12) has been selected as the Chair of the Department of Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.
AAMC CFAS-News, January 31, 2014:
NIH Director Dr. Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., on Thursday announced the appointment of Hannah Valantine, M.D. (ELAM '06), to the new position of Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity. Dr. Valantine "will lead NIH's effort to diversify the biomedical research workforce by developing a vision and comprehensive strategy to expand recruitment and retention, and promote inclusiveness and equity throughout the biomedical research enterprise." Dr. Valantine joins NIH from Stanford University where she served as Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Leadership at Stanford School of Medicine, and Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University Medical Center.
Patience White, M.D. (ELAM '96) is now the co-director of the Center for Health Care Transition Improvement.

Powerful women often take feminine stereotypes that can hold women back - the selfless mother and the dutiful daughter, for example - and use those stereotypes to propel themselves forward.
