Announcing HAIS Student & Teacher Awards
The Hawai'i Association of Independent Schools is proud to announce two new awards available to members schools. The purposes of the awards are to: recognize the unique accomplishments of students and staff in HAIS member schools;
establish a direct relationship between HAIS and its member schools; p rovide high school students with an external award that can be used for college applications or job placement; provide staff members with external recognition for their accomplishments. Each award can be presented annually to one staff member and one student. Please click here for more information on both awards.

The Teacher Leader Institute: Priority Registration Ends February 3
The Teacher Leader Institute is a 2-day workshop designed to help Department Heads, Grade Level Leaders and Team Leaders understand both the complexity and importance of their roles and provide them with essential tools for effective leadership, including:
- Becoming a 'leader of learning'
- Exploring practices that provoke learning and build ownership on teams, departments, and committees
- Adapting tools for developing, implementing and monitoring curriculum at the department or grade level
- Practicing specific leadership strategies and models for focusing the work of a department or grade level team on student learning

HAIS Teacher Representative Meeting: February 3
The first HAIS Teacher Representative meeting and networking event will be held on February 3 from 4:00-5:30 pm. Winston Sakurai Honored by NASSP for Technology Leadership
 Winston Sakurai, upper school principal at Hanalani Schools, was one of three tech-savvy school leaders selected as 2016 NASSP Digital Principals for integrating digital media in their efforts to improve instruction, student achievement, and their own leadership. The three 2016 NASSP Digital Principals will attend Ignite '16 in Orlando, FL, February 25-27 to formally receive their award and to present on a panel about technology leadership. Global Issues Network Deeper Dive: February 16
Join us for the Global Issues Network (GIN) Deeper Dive Event, on February 16 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm, at the St. Andrew's Schools. This event is intended for educators and students who are currently involved with GIN and for those who are interested in learning about GIN and how to form a GIN Club in their school. 2016 SOTF Conference Call for Proposals: Feb. 26
The 8th Annual Schools of the Future Conference, to be held on October 20-21, seeks proposal submissions related to pedagogy and best teaching practices to help educators prepare 21st century student learners. HAIS emails routinely get filtered to junk and SPAM folders, which has greatly impaired communication with many of our member schools and other organizations. HAIS Chaplains and Religious Educators Meeting: January 29
Hawai'i Baptist Academy will host the upcoming constituency quarterly meeting, aimed at enhancing understanding, practice, and support of faith development for students, faculty and staff. Some of the discussion will focus on insights from "The Spiritual Child" by Lisa Miller, Ph.D. The meeting will take place from 3-5 pm, at the Arts and Science wing of the Hawaii Baptist High School - D201-202, 2429 Pali Hwy. Parking is available at the Middle School.

Water Conservation Week Poster & Poetry Contests: February 24
This year's contest theme is "Pure Water - There Is No Substitute." Students are being asked to creatively express their understanding and appreciation of clean, fresh drinking water as one of our most valuable resources. All winning and honorable mention posters and poems will be displayed at different venues on Oahu, as well as be featured in our 2017 Water Conservation Calendar. Place winners can win up to $200 in prizes. Entries must be submitted with a completed entry form by Wednesday, February 24 to the Board of Water Supply Communications Office. The contest entry form, complete contest rules, and additional information are available online or can be obtained by contacting the BWS's Communications Office at 748-5041 or by email.

Reid Richards Foundation Scholarship: March 1
The Reid Richards Foundation was established 18 years ago to provide support for grieving children and young adults who have lost a parent or primary caretaker through death. To alleviate the financial burden, the Foundation established the Kamakaho'ohie Scholarship, which aims to help these young people in achieving their academic goals through financial assistance. The scholarship amounts will be no less than $2,000 and no more than $7,500. Please visit www.reidrichardsfoundation.com to review the guidelines and apply for the Kamakaho'ohie Scholarship. The completed application form, along with all necessary documentation, is due by March 1, 2016. Please email the Foundation with any questions.

The Hawai'i Visitors and Convention Bureau's Sharing Aloha program provides schools and teachers free Hawai'i-themed promotional gifts - including logo pens and pencils, luggage handles, sticky notes, and magnets - to hand out while traveling or hosting students from out of town. In 2015, more than 100 organizations took advantage of the program as they represented Hawai'i in various tournaments, programs, and events. The entire program is free and requesting items is easy. To participate, register online at www.sharingaloha.com before leaving for your next event, allowing at least five business days for processing.

Hawaii School Empowerment Conference: Jan. 24
The Education Institute of Hawaii (EIH) presents the 2nd Annual Hawaii School Empowerment Conference to be held on Sunday, January 24,from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm, at the Hawaii Convention Center.The conference will feature two prominent keynote speakers on education reform - Diane Ravitch and Pasi Sahlberg.This event is open to Hawaii principals, teachers, parents, students, education leaders, and community leaders interested in learning about school empowerment. HAHPERD 2016 Spring Workshop: February 8
 The Hawai'i Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (HAHPERD) is pleased to announce its 2016 Spring Workshop entitled Hoʻokikaika - To Make Strong - to be held at Punahou School. SHAPE America's "50 Million Strong by 2029" campaign is a movement to ensure that by the time today's preschoolers graduate from high school in 2029, all of America's students are benefiting from the skills, knowledge and opportunities to enjoy healthy, meaningful physical activity. This workshop will address ways to activate this initiative and advocate for HPE. Keynote speaker Leslie Hicks (SHAPE America Physical Activity Council member), will speak to this theme and discuss appropriate practices and essential components of P.E. Oahu Blended Learning Roundtable: February 4
Maryknoll School is partnering with Edmentum to present the Oahu Blended Learning Roundtable, Thursday February 4. The event will take place from 12:00 - 2:00 pm, on the Maryknoll High School campus, in the Learning Commons.Edmentum will be hosting a panel discussion on Blended Learning across the island, and invites educators to discuss strategies that work well for their students and teachers. Registration is now open for the 2016 Ignite Innovation Conference, to be hosted by 'Iolani School on Saturday, February 13.
