Robert Landau Star-Advertiser Article
Robert Landau, HAIS's new Executive Director, was featured in a Star-Advertiser article last week. The article provides an overview of Robert's international career, which has spanned nearly 40 years in Europe, Asia and the United States. He has worked as an educator, principal, superintendent and director and, most recently, was deputy superintendent of the prestigious Singapore American School in Singapore. HAIS Job Announcement: Director of Marketing and Communications
HAIS is seeking a Director of Marketing and Communications with exceptional communication skills. This individual must be a strategic thinker and enthusiastic about the association's mission, vision and plans for the future. The Director of Marketing and Communications will have a significant role in crafting the 'voice' and 'face' of the association, and will be responsible for developing messaging and materials that capture the spirit and happenings of HAIS. Hawaii Schools Digital Media Grant: August 31
The Hawaii Educational Networking Consortium (HENC), of which HAIS is a member, has almost $80,000 to distribute this year to schools in awards ranging from $500 to $3,000 per school. The funds can be used to purchase video production equipment and supplies, as well as for teacher professional development in digital media production. Please view the flyer for more information. The flyer also includes a link to a newly created resource for helping teachers learn how to use digital video in the classroom to support all types of learning - and how to do it with very little money. The deadline for applying is August 31.

Opportunity to Screen "Most Likely to Succeed"
HAIS has arranged for a 50% reduction in the screening fee ($175 instead of $350) for the educational documentary film "Most Likely To Succeed" for HAIS member institutions. Hawaii Education Leadership Summit: October 1
Registration is now open for the 3rd Annual Hawaii Education Leadership Summit (HELS), which will take place on Monday, November 2 from 8:30 am-3:30 pm. This event is an opportunity for school leaders to gain resources, expertise and strategies to lead and transform their schools. The summit will feature Monica Martinez and Dennis McGrath, co-authors of "Deeper Learning: How Eight Innovative Public Schools are Transforming Education in the Twenty First Century." Creative Challenge Art Contest: August 31
Artists grades 6 -8 have the opportunity to have their work published and to receive media attention by competing in this year's 2015 Creative Challenge Art Contest. Participating schools will be eligible to receive fun giveaways, win prizes and hear from Legacy of Life Hawaii about health, fitness and how organ donation saves lives. Artistic expression is encouraged and students should strive to make a positive difference in the world around them, through their art. PAAC Global Leadership Program: September 13
Twenty students will be selected for the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council's (PAAC) Global Leadership Program in 2015-2016. Their goal is to develop global citizens who are informed about international issues, empowered to make a difference, and feel connected with others around the world. Program components address personal leadership, social identity development, intercultural sensitivity, and global citizenship. Students will engage in global issues and take leadership roles at PAAC's High School Program events in the fall and spring and complete a final leadership project in their school or district. Student Opportunities through Senator Schatz's Office
The Office of U.S. Senator Brian Schatz would like to share some information about opportunities for Hawaii high school students. Public, private, charter, and homeschooled seniors may apply. For more information, please visit their website or call (808) 523-2061. Senator Schatz's staff is also available to answer questions or share these programs at school or association events.
- The Schatz Seniors High School Internship Program provides a hands-on learning opportunity about the U.S. Senate, creates a forum for students to share issues and information with the Senator and his staff, and encourages students to be leaders and advocates in their schools and communities. The internship runs from October 2015 - April 2016, and interns must commit for the full term. Click here for the application, due September 18.
- U.S. Service Academy Appointments: Senator Schatz has the honor and privilege of nominating exceptional students from the state of Hawaii for appointment to the U.S. Service Academies. Students are encouraged to apply to their Congressional sponsors and Service Academies in the spring of their junior year. Students in their senior year will also be considered. - The U.S. Senate Youth Program provides an opportunity for two Hawaii high school juniors or seniors to attend a week-long government and leadership education program in Washington, D.C. In addition, each delegate will also be awarded a $5,000 College Scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science. National Philanthropy Day Youth Award Nominations: September 4
The Aloha Chapter of the Association of Professional Fundraisers invites you to nominate an outstanding junior or senior student or student group at your school for the Outstanding Youth Award at the National Philanthropy Day honors award lunch, which will take place on Nov. 17, at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. Each year, the awards luncheon honors individuals and organizations in Hawaii who enhance the quality of life here through their volunteerism. Click here for the nomination criteria and form. The Hawaii Theater Center Presents "Honu by the Sea": September 9-18
The Hawaii Theatre Center presents Johnson Enos's underwater fantasy "Honu by the Sea - the Musical." The production opens on September 9 and will perform several Student Matinee performances through September 18. The show features original Broadway-style music and lyrics by Enos, and is produced in partnership with Disney Productions International. The story delivers messages about the value of friendship and the importance of taking care of the ocean environment. Independent Schools Admissions Fairs
The Admissions Fairs provide an opportunity for prospective parents and students to meet with preschool through high school admissions representatives, and learn about the wide variety of choices among Hawaii's independent schools. Each fair will also include informative breakout sessions on the admissions and financial aid processes.
Honolulu Fair: Saturday, September 26 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm, at the Japanese Cultural Center.

LifeSmarts Program Open for Registration
LifeSmarts is a free educational program that develops the consumer and marketplace skills of teenagers via a competition format. Registration is now open for students grades 6-12. Teams must be comprised of at least four students and a teacher, who will serve as the coach. Coaches can have multiple teams. Creative Writing Contest for 5th Graders: February 5
The Hawaii chapter of the American Immigration Lawyer's Association, in conjunction with the American Immigration Council, is pleased to announce their 2016 Creative Writing Contest. The contest is open to 5th grade students only and the topic is "Why I'm Glad America is a Nation of Immigrants." Entries are limited to 500 words and can be in the form of an essay, a poem, interview or story. Each chapter chooses a winner and the national winner will read the winning piece at their annual Immigration Lawyers conference in June 2016. Hawaii entries are due by February 5, 2016. ISTE Making IT Happen Award Nominations: September 1
The Making IT Happen award honors outstanding educators and leaders who demonstrate extraordinary commitment, leadership, courage and persistence in improving digital learning opportunities for students. Since its inception in 1995 more than 500 educators from around the world have received the award. The spirit of the Making IT Happen award supports ISTE's vision of a world in which all learners thrive, achieve and contribute. The Hawaii Society for Technology in Education, an affiliate of ISTE, will award two winners this year. The winners will be honored at the SOTF Conference in November. The 12th Annual Nonprofit Organizations Seminar will be held on September 18 at the Pagoda Hotel.
