Message from the Director
HAIS Logo Contest: October 16
HAIS is pleased to announce a contest to design a new logo, as  part of its strategic visioning initiative. The winning logo will help achieve our new visual identity . We are seeking current students who can design a creative, innovative and professional logo. HAIS will award a total of $675 worth of prizes, including iTunes gift cards for the top 3 student entries and a $500 Innovation Grant for the winner's school. The winning design will be used as the Official Logo for the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools. All entries must be received no later than October 16. Admissions Fairs Registration Open: September 21
Families will soon be looking at their educational options for the 2016-17 school-year. The Admissions Fairs provide an opportunity for prospective parents and students to meet with preschool through high school admissions representatives, and learn about the wide variety of choices among Hawaii's independent schools. Each fair will also include two breakout sessions and are free and open to the public. Schools can participate in one, two or all three fairs. The cost to participate is $175 per fair, per school. SOTF Regular Registration Deadline: September 30
Join teachers and administrators from Hawaii's public, private, charter and parochial schools as they focus on how to best transform our existing schools and create new learning environments for the 21st Century, at this year's Schools of the Future (SOTF) Conference, November 3 & 4. The deadline to register at the regular registration rate is September 30, after which the late registration rate kicks in. Conference highlights include four special thematic, hands-on learning spaces or "playgrounds" - Early Childhood Learning, Robotics, Digital Video & Media, and a Maker Space, as well as the Next Generation Library track that runs all day Wednesday. Opportunity to Screen "Most Likely to Succeed"
HAIS has arranged for a 50% reduction in the screening fee ($175 instead of $350) for the educational documentary film "Most Likely to Succeed" for HAIS member institutions. Hawaii Education Leadership Summit: October 1

Registration is now open for the 3rd Annual Hawaii Education Leadership Summit (HELS), which will take place on Monday, November 2 from 8:30 am-3:30 pm. This event is an opportunity for school leaders to gain resources, expertise and strategies to lead and transform their schools. The summit will feature Monica Martinez and Dennis McGrath, co-authors of "Deeper Learning: How Eight Innovative Public Schools are Transforming Education in the Twenty First Century." Assets High School New Location
On August 18, Assets High School celebrated their first day of school on a new campus, which is the former location of Academy of the Pacific School in Alewa Heights. The opening also coincides with Assets' 60th anniversary celebration this year. 
Independent Schools Admissions Fairs   

The Admissions Fairs provide an opportunity for prospective parents and students to meet with preschool through high school admissions representatives, and learn about the wide variety of choices among Hawaii's independent schools. Each fair will also include informative breakout sessions on the admissions and financial aid processes.

 

Honolulu Fair: Saturday, September 26 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm, at the Japanese Cultural Center.

  • Financing an Independent School Education: 12:00-12:30 pm             
Leeward Fair: Tuesday, September 29 from 5:00-7:30 pm at the Pearl Country Club.

The Art of the Story Workshop: September 9
Āina Aloha, the art of the story, is a professional development workshop for educators, teacher trainers, storytellers, after school specialists, kupuna and community leaders. During this event, participants will integrate visual art and the writing process to enhance student creative writing ability, while connecting art forms to other subject areas. Attendees will also deepen their knowledge of Hawaiian history through the language of visual art. The workshop will take place from 3:00 - 6:00 pm, on September 9, at Arts@Marks Garage. Schools of the Future Student Volunteer Opportunity
The Hawaii Society for Technology in Education (HSTE) is seeking students to serve as room monitors at this year's Schools of the Future Conference, November 3 & 4. The opportunity is open to 2 groups - 1 group per day- of 16 students (11th or 12th graders) and one teacher chaperone. The students and chaperone will receive free admission to the conference, including breakfast and lunch for the day. The students will be responsible to be at each room session (3 per day) to do a head count, assist the presenter if there is a technical problem, and make sure the presenter doesn't move the equipment. Student Conference - Company Branding: October 16
The Hawaii Business Education Association (HBEA) is sponsoring a conference at Leeward Community College on Friday, October 16. It will include an industry overview by Ms. Carol Ono, Senior Vice President and Talent Acquisition Manager, First Hawaiian Bank; a tour of McDonald's to learn about their quality control and operations management; and an articulation meeting among middle, high school, and postsecondary teachers to discuss opportunities available for students to obtain college credits. Inspired in Hawaii Contest: November 6
The Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation "Inspired in Hawaii" Contest encourages Hawaii's students to "dream big and make Hawaii a better place." This year's contest has $10,000 in cash awards for students and their teachers who place first, second or third. The contest is open to students in kindergarten through grade 12 who are current residents of the state of Hawaii. Each entry must identify an existing problem in Hawaii and offer a thoughtful solution to the problem. There are three divisions: Essay, Poster and Video, and students may enter only one division. Mindsight & Social Emotional Learning: September 3
The University Lab School is hosting a virtual interactive discussion with Dr. Daniel Siegel, on September 3, where he will present his groundbreaking work on the power of the adolescent brain, social and emotional learning, and his work with the Mindsight Institute. Daniel J. Siegel, M.D. is an internationally acclaimed author, award winning educator, and renowned child psychiatrist. The event will take place from 6:00 - 7:15 pm in the Multipurpose Building. Digital Literacy Conference: September 12
The Ka Hui Heluhelu State Council will be hosting a conference on September 12 at 'Iolani School, entitled Digital Literacy: Using Technology to make Connections. The conference will include two keynote speakers and a breakout session with local teacher leaders sharing how they use technology to enhance teaching and student learning. Teaching Shakespeare Workshop: September 19
The Folger Shakespeare Library's Teaching Shakespeare Workshop will be conducted at Kapiolani Community College on October 10. Space is limited to 30 High School/Middle School English and Theater teachers, and the registration deadline is September 19. MISO Conference: September 25
The Maui Independent Schools Organization (MISO) is holding its biennial MISO Conference on Friday, September 25 at Kamehameha Schools -Maui from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm. This year's keynote address will be made by Robert Landau. The 50+ sessions scheduled for the day will relate to themes including technology in education, wellness and balance for teachers and students, learning differences and challenges, and other inspiring educational initiatives. The conference is open to educators from all islands and the cost of participation is $20.00 (travel expenses are the responsibility of the participant). University of Hawaii Online MEd in Middle & Secondary Education
The University of Hawai'i at Manoa M.Ed. in Curriculum Studies with a Middle Level Emphasis Program (MSLMED) is recruiting for a new cohort to begin in summer 2016.  This is a 2 year program, which will include summers, with graduation taking place in August 2018. MSLMED focuses on the education and health of adolescents and is 100% online, with classes taught "live" via the interactive Blackboard-Collaborate system.  Classes meet 5-7:30pm HST every Monday and one Wednesday per month during the school year.  For more information, click here to view the brochure.
Moody's Mega Math Challenge
Moody's Mega Math (M3) Challenge is an Internet-based applied math competition for high school students. The contest is free and open to high school juniors and seniors in the U.S.  Working in teams of three to five, participants must solve an open-ended, math-modeling problem focused on a realistic issue-in 14 hours. Scholarships totaling $150,000 toward the pursuit of higher education are awarded to the top teams. The real-world focus of the competition introduces students to applied math as a powerful problem-solving tool and, potentially, as a viable and exciting profession. Challenge weekend is set for February 27-28, 2016. Registration opens in November and will be available on the website, along with complete details, rules, a free downloadable modeling handbook, and archives of previous Challenge problems.
