Sunday of the Passion:

Palm Sunday

Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jessus Christ to take upon him our nature and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

EYE14 - Hawai'i Youth Selected for Planning Team

Casey NakamuraDuring the 2011 Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) and Mission in Minnesota, the Hawai'i delegation had a blast worshipping and making new friends from around the globe.  With over 1,300 Episcopal high school youth and adult leaders in attendance, the event was a tranformative experience for many.

Casey Nakamura, one of the youth from All Saints' Church on Kaua'i, was a freshman at the time, and before leaving, declared her desire to be on the planning and design team for the next event in 2014. Her prayers were answered last week in an announcement from the Episcopal Church.  Out of 70 applicants, 14 were selected for this monumental task that will have them traveling several times over the next 16 months to plan the next event.  EYE14 will be taking place in Pennsylvania in July 2014.  Casey will be documenting her journey through a blog on the diocesan website and other social media avenues.  Congratulations Casey!

 Church Property Survey
By Dot Shigemura
A group has been formed by the Bishop to help research and document information about all the properties of the Diocese.  While we find that we have good data on every property regarding site plans and valuations, we find that we don't have as good information when it comes to possible upcoming repairs and needs throughout the properties, and  how all our properties are used throughout the week.

A short electronic survey will be forwarded to all clergy, wardens and treasurers in early April, with a response date of mid-April.  The survey will provide a broad overview of each property that will be helpful to understand what the collective needs and uses of our properties are around the state.

Should  you have any questions, please contact any of the group's members: Dot Shigemura, Keane Akao, Cecilia Fordham, John Hawkins, or Bill Rees.

What's Happening in The Episcopal Church?

Announcements from around The Episcopal Church...

________________________________________________________

Pope Francis
Church Leaders on Pope Francis
As the annoucenement of Cardinal Bergoglio as successor to His Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, leaders from around the world shared statements about his election, including the Episcopal Church's Presiding and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Jefferst Schori at GC2012 From Presiding Bishop Kathering Jefferts Schori:
"The Episcopal Church will pray for the new Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis I, and for the possibility of constructive dialogue and cooperation between our Churches."

Archbishop Welby From the Archbishop of Canterbury, Archbishop Justin Welby:
"We wish Pope Francis every blessing in the enormous responsibilities that he has assumed on behalf of Roman Catholics around the world.  His election is also of great significance to Christians everywhere, not least among Anglicans. We have long since recognized - and often reaffimed - that our churchces hold a special place for one another. I look forward to meeting Pope Francis, and to walking and working together to build on the consistent legacy of our predecessors. May our love of Christ unite us, and instensify our service in a genuine and gruitful ecumenism that can be a blessing for the Body of Christ throughout the world."  (Click HERE to read his full statement.)

Episcopal House of Bishops offers A Word to the Church: Godly Leadership in the Face of Violence
During a recent retreat in North Carolina, the House of Bishops shared the following message:

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

Your House of Bishops has gathered in retreat from March 8-12 at Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, NC.  The theme for our days together has been "Godly Leadership in the Midst of Loss."  We have heard moving reflections on loss in the wake of: the shootings in Newtown, Hurricane Sandy, the ongoing struggles in Haiti, historical trauma experienced by Native Americans in South Dakota, and physical illness.  Being together in conversation, prayer and common worship, we have shared the reality of new life in the resurrected Jesus who has overcome death and redeems our losses.

Our time together has brought us to a new place of recognition with respect to how violence infects, and affects, our lives.  We have considered how the reality of violence in our world, our society, our churches, our homes, and ourselves alienate us from God and each other.  And we repent that we have too often neglected to challenge violence of every kind and pursue peace and reconciliation.  In this Lenten season we pray:  "Accept our repentance, Lord, for the wrongs we have done: for our blindness to human need and suffering, and our indifference to injustice and cruelty."  (From the Litany of Penance for Ash Wednesday, BCP p. 268)  READ MORE...

Episcopal Church Office of Communication presents White Paper on Marketing for Churches

The Episcopal Church Office of Communication, in collaboration with  The Living Church Foundation, has issued a White Paper to guide congregations and to assist them in marketing and advertising efforts as part of their evangelism initiatives.

Marketing Your Parish: Advertising Best Practices for Effective Evangelism, is available at no fee HERE

"We're working to equip Episcopal parishes with skills needed for evangelism in the 21st century," commented Anne Rudig, Episcopal Church Director of Communication. Based on articles written by the Rev. Jake Dell that first appeared in the September 2012 and the January 2013 issues of The Living Church, the White Paper is geared to both congregations that are just starting with their marketing-as-evangelism plans, including websites and social media, and to those with established marketing campaigns who wish to learn more ways.

For more information, contact Jake Dell.
