Interviews gone wrong

Janet McNece of Productive Staffing once had an applicant glide into a job interview on Heelys sneaker skates.

Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce President Steve Halter has had a person show up to a job interview accompanied by a banned shoplifter back when he was manager of Walmart.

To teach Technical Career Center students not to live in infamy as such, human resource professionals and school volunteers performed botched interviews on Friday in order to prove a point.

"I just think if you make a bad enough impression it'll stick with (the students), as opposed to drilling what they should do, which they tune out after a while," explained Vocational Resource Educator Barbie Hon, the event organizer. "Many of our students are going to go straight into the workforce."

Students shared observations with their teachers after the role-play during which applicants said inappropriate things, got distracted by their phone, used poor body language, etc.

"Your interview starts from the moment you get out of your car. Even before that, on social media," commented TCC Director Charles Kinsey, who would like to see the activity take place with each cohort of students.

The TCC began the mock interview exercise during the 2012/13 school year.

First presidential primary mock election held

Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders won the presidential primary Thursday at Poplar Bluff Senior High, according to a school-wide mock election tally.

While the election holds no bearing with most students under voting age, the results have historically foreshadowed those of Butler County, officials say.

A PBHS tradition during the general election every four years since 1996, the Social Studies Department event marked the first mock primary due to the amount of presidential hopefuls in the running.

"We want to instill the civic responsibility of voting," stated Gail Rosmarin, social studies teacher. "I tell students, every decision made by the government at any level affects your daily life. We don't want to create a society in which few people are deciding for the majority."

Manned by students, five precincts were designated throughout campus, one for each grade level and another for school personnel. On 'election day,' students chose a Democrat or Republican ballot, much like Missouri voters will do at the polls Tuesday, March 15. Afterward, students completed an exit poll designed by the AP U.S. history class for analysis.

Questions included which issues matter most, what qualities are important in a leader, how often the respondent has tuned in to the debates, and one trick question about the location Trump proposed to build a wall.

Math-A-Thon business partners recognized

O'Neal raised nearly $7,000 for St. Jude during the annual Math-A-Thon fundraiser for the children's research hospital, based on early estimates.

Business Night sponsors-Godfather's Pizza, Donut House, Skate City, Simply Swirled and McDonalds-were recognized on Wednesday at the elementary school for donating a portion of their proceeds to the school fundraiser.

The first Math-A-Thon was held at O'Neal in 1989. Within several years, the fundraiser gained full district support, bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars for St. Jude over the years.
