Pre-bid meeting held for elementary projects

A pre-bid meeting for the elementary school projects was held on Tuesday in the Administrative Building, attracting the interest of several area contractors.

The elementary portion of the buildings plan generally involves connecting the buildings on each of the four campuses with enclosed links or corridors in order to improve the safety of students.

The bid opening will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, in the Administrative Building. Construction at Eugene Field, Lake Road, Oak Grove and O'Neal is scheduled to take place from May 15-Aug. 25.

Black History Month speaker preaches unity

Rev. Ron Webb of Mt. Calvary Power House Church spoke to social studies classes for Black History Month about the work he is involved with across the state to repair the contentious relationship between law enforcement and the African American community.

"We are here today to commemorate the great progress that we have made in the country to achieve equality for all," American history teacher Mitch Davis said to about 65 Poplar Bluff High School students on Wednesday in the Kay Porter Theater.

Dr. Webb listed off some major contributions to society that African Americans have made throughout history, citing the ingenuity of George Washington Carver, Sarah Boone, Henry Brown, Gerald Lawson, George Alcorn Jr., and Madam C.J. Walker. He said he could not recall these inventors being discussed in the classroom growing up.

"Racism is a root issue," Webb stated. "Until you deal with the root, you're gonna have the fruit of it."

In the fall, Sen. Doug Libla of District 25 arranged for Webb to visit with Col. Bret Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol to discuss the recent unrest that began in Ferguson. A unity service was conceived from the meeting featuring whites, blacks, spiritual leaders and law enforcement officials that kicked off in Poplar Bluff with about 1,000 in attendance.

The tour continued in Columbia and will stop next in Kansas City, then in Joplin or Branson, and finally in Ferguson, Webb announced. "I believe through responsible dialogue, we can change," he said. "There's no resolution unless you come to the table."

Returning spelling champion wins again

Returning finalist from last year's spell-off, Blake Brown of O'Neal Elementary, won the seventh annual Fox Radio Network spelling bee on Wednesday at the station headquarters.

Blake vied live on the air against third graders Patiance Cochran of Eugene Field, Ireland Gowen of Lake Road and Destiny Jackson of Oak Grove. The students made it through 48 words without a misspelling, according to moderator Lee Spilberg of the Butler County Community Resource Council, the event sponsor.

To qualify for the spell-off, students competed at their respective elementary schools. In previous years, the spelling bee also included the second grade.
