A Poplar Bluff Junior High student is in talks with a retired NBA player about a possible record deal after creating a rap music video that garnered tens of millions of views, proving the power of technology possessed by Generation Z.
Last weekend Maurice Evans, now an entrepreneur, flew Bryson Morris and his mother Sherry out to Houston where the 13-year-old was treated to over a $1,000 shopping spree and locker room access during a Rockets vs. Washington Wizards game.
Evans, the owner of the management company Every Level of Success, is scheduled to visit Poplar Bluff on Tuesday with business partner Jordan Williams, a music industry lawyer, to present the Morris family with a contract for review. If both parties agree to the terms, the plan would be for Bryson to record an album during spring break in March.
"All of this happened really, really fast," Sherry explained. "Maurice Evans is our hero, basically. He's got so many facets to this company. Everything is already in place."
The initial meeting began with Evans picking up the mother and son from the airport, filming much of the experience. To get a sense of the teenager's style for purposes of branding, Evans let Bryson purchase some clothing. Before going to the Toyota Center, Evans introduced Bryson to his studio where he evidently has hundreds of instrumentals to choose from.
"They said they have artists that take weeks (to record a song)," Bryson recalled. "I came in there and wrote one in 10, 15 minutes that they were all in love with."
While he said he has always been a music fan, Bryson just got started experimenting making his own over the summer, according to his mother, who purchased him a microphone setup.
"He's got a lot in his head - a lot of thoughts that he's putting into songs," Sherry said. "He does very well in English-always has. He's very good at expressing himself."
