Math Club cracks top 10 in state competition

The high school Math Club placed ninth out of 27 schools in last month's Missouri Mathematics League contest.

Two juniors, Trenton Nepean and Humza Siddiqui, solved all the problems correctly, including the last question, which the league defines as being challenging for even the most gifted students. Juniors Hunter Aud and Katie Huskey, and senior Christian Cmehil-Warn, answered five out of six right. The top five scores from participants were recorded, totaling 27 out of 30 points for Poplar Bluff.

The next test will take place during academic lab Tuesday, Jan. 12. The monthly competitions serve as preparation for Math Field Day on April 14 at Southeast Missouri State University, according to co-sponsor Melissa Taylor, a high school math teacher. This past November, the Math Club participated in the Excellence in Mathematics Competition at St. Louis Community College to gain even more experience.

Rahlmann spotlighted on new state website

Susie Rahlmann, a long-time instructor of the Kindergarten Center, was one of the first in the state to be featured on a teacher-centered website that the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education recently rolled out.

Having been named the district-wide Teacher of the Year during 2012/13, Rahlmann was among a selection of faculty members submitted by the district to DESE for going above and beyond to help her students achieve success. The resulting article went viral locally last week when it was shared on social media.

"I want to say, I'm not sure why they picked me," Rahlmann wrote on Facebook in response to the multitude of comments and texts she has received. "There are many, many great teachers throughout PB Schools that should be selected and recognized every day... I'm glad to be a part of such a great school district."

A 17-year veteran, Rahlmann is a specialist at the kindergarten age level of development, always looking for an opportunity to incorporate a life lesson into the curriculum. She said she gains her fulfillment from watching students go from not being able to write their name to learning how to read an entire children's book. "I just feel like we're the lucky ones, getting to see the most growth," Rahlmann stated.

Ozark Border talks electricity with students

Ozark Border Electric Cooperative officials recently visited the Middle School to help wrap up with fifth graders a science unit on electricity.

The presenters, Josh Vishe (above) and Charles Hefner (below), discussed how electricity is produced, how Poplar Bluff gets its power and the dangers of getting electrocuted, according to teacher Melissa Lovette. Experiments included cooking a hotdog with a fork in an outlet to demonstrative shock hazards.

Bonus: Ice Cave

When art teacher Fawn Luecke has a notion to decorate, the creativity is not just confined to her classroom. Over Christmas break, Luecke could be found at the Kindergarten Center creating an ice age theme in a large portion of the facility. The Jurassic décor will become part of this year's art show slated to take place Thursday, March 10.

The students swear the building temperature gets colder when they walk through the ice cave, according to staff.
