Over 3,000 books collected during Jingle Jog

A total of 3,120 children's books were collected for the 10th annual Jingle Jog, which was held Friday, Dec. 11, at Oak Grove Elementary.

The Jingle Jog was established to teach elementary students about goal setting through charity and fitness. Students estimate how many laps they will run in a designated area on campus, and afterward they reflect on whether their goal was attainable, according to physical education instructor Amanda Lance.

The nonprofit chosen for the associated fundraising drive this year was the Little Red Bookshelf project which, after the New Year, will disperse books for students up to grade six at several select businesses throughout the community.

The event kicked off with a Christmas parade during which staff and community partners dressed up as popular characters. School sponsor Poplar Bluff Realty along with the JROTC, percussion band and cheerleaders participated in the festivities.

National Honor Society fall induction

Several Poplar Bluff High School students were inducted into the National Honor Society during the fall ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 10, in the Administrative Building. Joining their 22 schoolmates who made the pledge in spring were: Chase Burch, Zachary Cambron, Chang Chi, Steven Haley, Kailee Kanell, Zachery Lawrence and Mallory Pierce.

Selection is based on GPA, service, leadership and character by majority vote of a five-member faculty council appointed annually by the high school principal, according to chapter adviser Paul Conover, social studies teacher.

Booster Club names Athletes of the Month

The Poplar Bluff Mules Booster Club has selected Soccer player Jeffry Hardin and Cross Country runner Katie Sliger as Athletes of the Month for November.

Sliger was the Poplar Bluff Invitational and Jackson Invitational sophomore champion. She made All-Conference, All-District and was also a state qualifier. She is the first female at PBHS to break 20 minutes in the MSHSAA Class 4 state meet - a 5k. In the classroom, Sliger maintains an 11.40 GPA, including honor classes.

"One of the hardest working athletes I know, (Sliger) is extremely self-disciplined and goal oriented," Cross Country Coach Beth Lewis-Muse said.

Hardin, a junior, scored 19 goals and 14 assists during the 2015 season, adding to his career total of 63 goals and 38 assists. He was an All-State honorable mention in 2015 and made the second team in 2014; All-Regional and All-District first team during the 2014/15 season; and first team All-Conference in 2015 and second team the previous year.

Soccer Coach Steve Edwards described Hardin as a leader on the field, adding: "He brings the level of play up for everyone he is around."

Bonus: Jingle Bells

An annual tradition, Poplar Bluff R-I administrators serve a day on Monday, Dec. 7, at Walmart, bell ringing for the Salvation Army.
