Mock 'Shark Tank' shows student innovation
Well-prepared Poplar Bluff Middle Schoolers gave seasoned business and school technology leaders a run for their money on Friday, Feb. 19, during a mock Shark Tank.
Students impressed the panel of judges with clever inventions including a baseball fetcher, Wi-Fi enhancer, shoe-tying device, singing voice corrector, vital organ preserver and scented T-shirt for when deodorant application is forgotten.
"I just wanted to show (the students) how they could make an impact," explained Cody Young, sixth grade science teacher. "I guarantee I covered every strand without touching a purple science textbook, and they're gonna remember it! These are real world skills.
To begin the cross-curricular project-based learning assignment last month, students studied famous inventors and the impact their innovations had on society. They then thought up inventions to resolve inconveniences in their own lives, and made commercials with iMovie to sell the products to their classmates. Finally, Young selected the top six groups to participate in the Shark Tank, which was modeled after the popular CNBC reality series.

Famous Missourians Living Museum
Parents and school partners visited Oak Grove Elementary School on Friday, Feb. 19, for an exclusive viewing of the Famous Missourians Living Museum.
An annual tradition, fourth graders research a famous figure with Missouri ties, then dress up as the individual and share life facts when prompted by the public.
Above: Aiden Nguyen portrays Dick Van Dyke, the entertainer of nearly seven decades, from West Plains.
Below: Student Alisyn Peck teaches her audience about Kennett native Sheryl Crow, a popular artist at the living museum. Fun Fact: Sheryl Crow actually sent over five autographed headshots for the students who portrayed her. Thanks, Sheryl!

Growing Academic Team awarded $1,000
The Poplar Bluff High School Academic Team has in recent weeks received $1,000 in grants, which will be used for requisite equipment and fees to send more students to Quiz Bowl camp.
The Academic Assistance Group approved a $750 mini-grant to go toward registration and travel to the 2016 ACE Quiz Bowl. Matt's Buzzers, an international program, awarded an additional $250 so the Academic Team can purchase a replacement buzzer system.
"We need more funds because the growth in number of our teams has caused me to try to start entering more than one team at tournaments when the host schools allow it, resulting in twice the entry fee expenses," explained science teacher Gail Karlish, the team sponsor. "A second reason is that the expenses of Scholar Bowl camp, which has proved very beneficial to our team during the last several years, is quite burdensome and prohibits many of our players from being able to attend."
Above: Two varsity Academic Teams took first and fourth, respectively, on Saturday in Jackson. Students Trenton Nepean and Jackson Rideout earned individual medals. Pictured are: (Back row from left) Humza Siddiqui, Hamiz Mirza, Trenton Nepean, Christian Cmehil-Warn and Hunter Aug; (front row, left to right) Chang Chi, Jackson Rideout and Diego Rivetti.
