SoCalBio Hosts A China Partnership Summit
Held on June 6 at the Jonathan Club in downtown Los Angeles, this summit honored a delegation from the City of Shenyang, Liaoning Province in Northern China,which was led by Shenyang 's Vice Mayor Kai Hunag. The Summit featured presentations by Southern California device and biotech companies -- including SnapMD, MannKind Corp., Second Sight Medical Products, Proa Medical, BCN Biosciences, Vivoscript, StemVax, Greenwings Biomedical and Chromologic -- with interest in the fast growing Chinese market. SoCalBio is currently exploring the possibility of creating an innovation hub in Northern China to help American companies tap the Chinese market for resources to perform pre -clinical and clinical research and identify partners for manufacturing, marketing and distribution services. Also, various proposals are being examined to determine how to make Los Angeles the signature destination of biomed Chinese companies interested in creating presence in the US.... Irvine-based and Venture-backed ophthalmology implant company AcuFocus went before an FDA committee on June 6. The FDA is considering the company's Kamra inlay, a surgical intracorneal implant that is under review to improve near and intermediate vision. According to FierceDevice Out of eight panelists, seven voted that Kamra is effective. On the question of safety, the panel chairman, who does not usually vote, broke a four-four tie to vote against Kamra on safety by voting against. But ultimately the panel voted that the benefits outweigh the risks, with four members voting yes, three voting no and one abstention.... Read more
