New Funding
Los Angeles-Based Biotech C3 Jian Raises $60 Million
 
Led by Todd Patrick, C3 Jian is developing biopharmaceuticals aimed at improving oral healthcare. The company announced that it has raised $60.5M in a Series D financing. The funding was led by Renaissance Holding Company, and also included affiliates of Delta Dental. According to the company's release, the funds will go towards clinical development of the company's peptide-based, antimicrobial drugs, which are aimed at attacking Streptococcus mutans, a bacterium responsible for dental caries or tooth decay ... China Bans Genetic Testing

Genetic Engineering News reports that "the China Food and Drug Administration posted a new regulation that immediately banned genetic testing-even previously approved services "including prenatal genetic testing, gene sequencing technology-related products, and cutting-edge products and technologies." The far-ranging ban applies to "all medical technology applications requiring detection equipment, medical diagnostic reagents, and related software; and other products, such as for disease prevention, diagnosis, care, treatment, monitoring, health status evaluation, and prediction of genetic diseases," according to a translation of the directive via Google Translate. ... Los Angeles-Based Second Sight Listed Among MIT's 2014 Fifty Smartest Companies in the World

MIT Technology Review's list of the "50 Smartest Companies 2014" features quite a few medical device and healthcare technology innovators. The list, compiled by the magazine's editors, is meant to "highlight companies that have displayed impressive innovations in the past year. It is not based on quantitative measures such as patents or R&D spending." Second Sight Medical Products is listed as number 20 because of its success in bringing to market a retinal implant that reverses blindness in patients suffering from retinitis pigmentosa .. Amgen's Talimogene Laherparepvec Reduced Size Of Melanoma Tumors In New Phase 3 Retrospective Analysis

Talimogene laherparepvec (T-vec) is an investigational oncolytic immunotherapy designed to selectively replicate in tumor tissue and to initiate a systemic anti-tumor immune response. Amgen said in a recent release that T-vec  "reduced the size of injected tumors and also non-injected tumors that had metastasized to other parts of the body. The analysis recorded tumor-level responses from a pivotal Phase 3 study evaluating talimogene laherparepvec in patients with injectable unresected stage IIIB, IIIC or IV melanoma compared to granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF)" .... Amgen Announces Positive Top-Line Results From Phase 3 TESLA Trial Of Evolocumab (AMG 145) In Patients With Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia

Amgen said its monoclonal antibody - evolocumab -- met its primary endpoint of the percent reduction from baseline at week 12 in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). The percent reduction in LDL-C, or "bad" cholesterol, was clinically meaningful and statistically significant. Evolocumab is an investigational fully human monoclonal antibody that inhibits proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), a protein that reduces the liver's ability to remove LDL-C from the blood..
