Aging Well Digest

Useful, interesting, and informative news for seniors and their families

          MAY 2012                                      Issue 21

 Dear Friends:

Welcome to the Aging Well Digest.

In this issue you will find 1) an invitation to visit my Aging Well Blog which is updated frequently with information of use to seniors and their families, 2) Advanced Care Directive videos and documents that may encourage end of life care conversations, 3) information on the cost of medical procedures and local price comparisons, and 4) a link to a recent Raleigh News and Observer report on the financial practices of North Carolina hospitals.

I trust you will be able to find something useful, informative, or interesting in this issue. I will continue to be on the lookout for the best and most helpful information on issues related to aging that I find each month and I encourage you to contact me if there are topics you would especially like me to investigate.

If you are looking to get information on a particular nursing home, this Medicare site has information on health inspections, staffing, prevalence of bedsores, percentages receiving flu shots, overall quality ratings and more.

Of course I am here to work with you if you need more personalized help with any of these issues or other aging related concerns. Your first consultation is free in order for us to determine if and how I can help you.

Thanks,  Jeff

The Aging Well Blog

This is the 21st edition of my Aging Well Digest. Every month I try to filter through the many articles, videos, reports, etc. that come to my attention and choose the four most promising to deliver to you. Lately however, I have found this editing process more difficult. To be honest, there is so much good information to be had our there that I could easily triple or quadruple the number of articles in the monthly digest. So rather than enlarge this digest or send them to you more frequently, I have decided to create an Aging Well Blog that you can visit at your convenience.
I will continue to publish this digest every month and send it to you via email, but for more up to date news and commentary I hope you will visit the Aging Well Blog.

Advanced Care Directive Videos from Duke

canada lake It is not uncommon that individuals and families postpone, sometimes indefinitely, conversations about end of life care. The consequences of that avoidance however can be devastating to those families when the time comes to implement Advanced Care Directives. Advanced Care Directive is an umbrella term that encompasses living wills, health care power of attorney, do not resuscitate and intubate directives, and MOST and Five Wishes forms. To help inform and spur such conversations, Duke has created several new Advanced Care Planning videos. Visit those tools at the first link below. To get an idea of how important family communication is when creating ACP documents, take a look at the second link below. To view a living will and healthcare surrogate document, go the the third link below.

Procedure Price Comparison -  North Carolina

topsail clouds Ever wonder how much you are actually paying for a medical procedure? For those with insurance its a question has been easy to ignore. The consequences of the rapid rise in health care costs (out of reach insurance premiums, the viability of Medicare, the decline of employee health benefits) has begun to force us to ask the same sort of questions about health care costs as we would any other consumer product. Below are links to some tools that will help you to do just that. These tools will help you to find the average "fair" price of common medical procedures, make local price comparisons, and translate insurance jargon into "plain speak".

Prognosis: Profits

beach seaweed During the last week of April, 2012, the Raleigh News and Observer and the Charlotte Observer jointly published a week long series on statewide hospital practices called Prognosis: Profits. Included are investigative reports on the political clout of hospitals, aggressive bill collection practices, and the tax status of "not for profit" hospitals. Included is an interactive map that shows the revenues, margins, and charity care percentages of all North Carolina Hospitals.
