Useful, interesting, and informative news for seniors and their families

  from Jeff Goll, Senior Advisor

 Dear Friends:

This is first 2011 edition of the Aging Well Digest and I hope this year you will be able to find something useful, informative, or just plain interesting in each forthcoming edition. I will continue to be on the lookout for the best and most helpful information on issues related to aging that I find each month and I encourage you to contact me if there are topics you would especially like me to investigate.

In this issue, you will find links to articles concerning low nursing pay in medicaid care facilities, the CLASS Act, an affordable alternative to Long Term Care Insurance, the dangers of falls for seniors, and the advantages for creativity in older brains.

Of course I am here to work with you if you need more personalized help with any of these issues or other aging related concerns. Your first consultation is free in order for us to determine if and how I can help you.

Thanks,  Jeff

Poor Nursing Home Pay

tree !A study by the long term care research group Eljay determined that Medicaid payments for nursing care in senior facilities amounted to less than the minimum wage. Nationwide pay averaged $7.17 per hour. To fill the gap many states already resort to using Medicare monies which are also very tight. In all likelihood the needs of the Baby Boom generation will stress our care delivery system even further and these transfers will become unsustainable.

The Class Act

tree 2The CLASS Act (Community Living Assistance Services and Support) is one of the provisions in the new Affordable Care Act. It is a new tool that may be attractive to those who either cannot qualify or cannot afford private Long Term Care Insurance. While CLASS is not currently operating, it will eventually provide cash to help pay for assisted living costs for those who participate. Essentially it is a voluntary, federally administered, participant financed insurance plan that will not exclude persons for pre-existing conditions or health status. It is likely to be up and running by late 2012 or 2013.

Falls and Fractures Among Seniors
tree 6Falls are the most common cause of injury among seniors. One third of persons over 65 suffer falls each year and many lead to serious injury or death. Hip fractures are the most dangerous and the cost of treatment and rehabilitation are enormous. This article describes types of common fall injuries, environmental and medical factors that can lead to them, and preventive measures to minimize the risk of falling.

 Creative Advantages for Older Brains

tree 5I have spoken often about how I think that seniors have unique advantages when it come to creativity. In this article from Psychology Today, Harvard researcher Shelley Carson argues that instead of retiring at age 65, seniors should transition to a creative life. She describes the many ways that older brains are ideally suited for achievement in a creative endeavor.
