In Memorium: Margarita Escarfullet
Labor and the Latino community recently lost a great champion in the struggle for human rights, civil rights, civic participation, and social justice, Margarita Escarfullet. Margarita devoted her life to her family, our community, and to the work of the union she loved, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). At AFT Margarita was the Assistant Director for Human Rights, where she worked closely with allied groups, including USHLI. Margarita never let her difficult battles with life-threatening diseases interfere with her commitment to family, community, and AFT. She will be missed by all whom she touched, inspired, and served like the true champion that she was.

Jose Torrez Appears on News hour
with Jim Lehrer
Jose Torrez, a two-year participant in USHLI's 21st Century Leaders Internship Program and currently supervising interns, was a guest on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer recently to discuss the Latino youth vote, which is transforming Latino politics. News Hour is one of the most watched programs on television today. Young Latinos 18-29 years of age comprise 42% of Latino registered voters in Chicago and are credited with having enabled Barack Obama to win the Illinois primary. Jose, a senior at DePaul University, has registered 4,500 new voters during his USHLI internship.

Students in our 21st Century Leaders Internship program have registered 40,600 new voters to date.
