Themed Vota Por Tu Futuro, the partnership registered voters at the 19th Annual Fiesta Broadway, which was held April 27. USHLI Supports Immigration March |
Two years later, the hopes and dreams of millions of immigrants remain the same and unfulfilled - social justice, a path toward legalization, family reunification, and economic opportunity. Joining with hundreds of thousands of immigration reform advocates who marched in cities across the nation, an estimated 15,000 activists marched through the streets of Chicago's business and financial districts and then held a rally at the federal plaza. Familiar chants could be heard throughout the march route - "Si se puede" and "El pueblo unido, jamas sera vencido", among others.
Flags of various Latin American countries waved over the crowd that gathered for the May Day march in downtown Chicago. An optimistic spirit could be seen in their dream-filled eyes. Children, men, women, teenagers, and seniors of all nationalities came together as one to protest government inaction at the federal level, wrongful action at the local and state levels, and to demand that the rights of all immigrants in this country be protected. The chants, marches, and the struggle will continue until the federal government responds in a just, fair and humane way to the plight of millions of immigrants in this country. And millions of Latinos will turn out to vote in record-breaking numbers on November 4, 2008, to help elect local, state and federal officials who are listening and defeat those who are not. S.A.L.S.A. Organizes in Midwest and Central States |
SALSA (Strategic Alliance for Latino Student Action) organizing meetings were held in Chicago (May 1) and Kansas City (May 2). The Midwest SALSA meeting was hosted by Robert Morris College. The Central States SALSA meeting was hosted by the Guadalupe Centers. (photos)
The purpose for the meetings was to engage student leaders, advisors, and advocates in formulating plans for the 2008/2009 academic year. Participants agreed to convene a program planning committee in June for their respective regional conferences that will be held next fall, and to organize and conduct voter registration activities and events on their campuses when students return for the fall semester. They also agreed to organize G-O-T-V parties utilizing the free minutes they have on their cell phones, email, and text messaging on weekends to promote early voting in the presidential election, as well as on Election Day November 4. Finally, participants agreed to have their organizations sponsor USHLI's Collegiate Leadership Development Program on their respective campuses immediately following the presidential election, and to organize students to attend our regional conferences in October and our national conference in 2009.
