MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO

This old Latin adage translates happiness as "a healthy mind in a healthy body."

THE 4 PRINCIPLES OF MENS SANO IN CORPORE SANO

1. Distress diminishes happiness.  It's well documented and within our own experience that high levels of unnecessary stress (which I call "distress") can diminish our sense of happiness (joy).

2. Physical Exercise. It's also well documented that physical exercise can both prevent and relieve "distress" and give us a sense of well-being, thus honoring the corpore sano (healthy body).

3. It's easier said than done. Since we know the above principles to be true, why is it so challenging for most of us to commit to a real physical conditioning program? Most of us wait for the perfect time (translated "excuses") such as:

  • "When I finish the house project"
  • "After my vacation"
  • "When work settles down"
  • "When the kids are out of school"
  • "When the kids go back to school"
  • "Etc., etc., etc."-As Yuhl Brenner said in "The King & I"

4. Declaration and accountability. It's well known that declaring our commitment to someone else and telling them to hold us accountable is the best way to keep our word.

EXERCISE

This week I invite you to do the following:

1. List the benefits to your body from physical conditioning.

2. List the benefits to your mind or emotion from physical conditioning.

3. List one or two types of exercises that will give you those benefits.

4. Declare to one person (of course you can declare to me) your commitment for physical exercise for the next 21 days and ask them to hold you accountable every day.

5. If you are already successfully practicing good physical conditioning, then share your benefits with two people you care about.

I really want to hear from you and will be glad to hold you accountable. It's part of my coaching practice.

For those of you who are already on the path, please share with me the benefits you are getting and your strategy for staying on the path.

"If I'd known I would live this long, I would have taken better care of my body."

-sounds like Rodney Dangerfield, doesn't it?
