REALITY OR THOUGHTS |
We tend to interpret our thoughts as reality instead of recognizing them as just the result of our thinking. This is an important awareness because it empowers us to dismiss negative thoughts. Then we can return to our natural state of happiness. Here's two techniques to assist you.
1. Dwelleth Not. A negative thought is just a thought, but if we dwell on it and chase it, it can be futile and cause real problems. If a negative thought occurs, you can instead acknowledge it's just a thought or say something like "there goes my thought again." Imagine your thought as a cloud that is passing by.
2. Lighten Up. Stop taking your thoughts so seriously. Soften up. Let thoughts just be thoughts. Remember, when you're thinking about something, it does not mean you need to give it a value judgment of importance or seriousness.

EXERCISE |
This week I invite you to do the following:
1. Notice when you have a negative thought. Be aware and observe the situation. Did you let your thoughts run wild? Did you feel compelled to analyze your thoughts? What, if any, postive outcome did you notice?
2. Be aware of a time when you lightened up and let the thoughts just pass. Was this a more pleasant experience than dwelling on your negative thoughts?
This is a new a approach for most of us. I welcome hearing from you and am really interested in hearing what you have to say about your experience in this exercise. I want to know what worked for you and what didn't work for you. I will listen to you and we will learn together.
