January 19, 2012

Dear Notre Dame Families:

Even though the loss to the Giants was disappointing, it was a great season!  Thank you to the Green Bay Packers for a fantastic year! 15-1!

As many of you already know we are studying the multi-age academic model for the Elementary School, specifically for the Fourth and Fifth grade for next year.  There are three points I want to make clear; 1. this model will be implemented only if we (Parents, Teachers, and Administration) believe in its academic merits and has support from both Parents and Teachers, 2. it will not be a short term fix for class size reasons,  we will be committed to multiple years and possible expansion to other grades in future years,  3.  participation in the multi-age classroom will be voluntary based on Parent and Teacher input.  For more information please attend the parent forum at the Dolski Center starting at 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday,  January 25th.

Mark your calendars!  We have added an early release day on Thursday, April 5th.  School will be dismissed at 11:30 A.M.  The change is being made to accommodate an added in-service day for teachers/staff.

Notre Dame will be hosting an Open House/Breakfast on January 29th to say thank you to the parishes and show off our school to prospective students.  The open house will be after masses on the 29th and will run from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.  The Notre Dame Teachers will be there to greet and answer questions. Tell your friends or better yet bring them to mass and the open house: Openhouse

Fr. Patrick will be having Mass Server training for those students in 4th and 5th Grade on Jan. 24th from 1:00-2:00 and for those students in 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade on Jan. 25th from 1:00-2:00.  All current and new Mass Servers should attend.

Notre Dame has formed a wellness committee made up of teachers, staff, and parents.  This committee will make recommendations to enhance the Notre Dame lunch program.  Lynn Wolfram is chairing this committee.  You can contact Lynn at lwolfram00@yahoo.com or phone # 632-7117 to participate or offer suggestions.

The Teachers and Staff at Notre Dame want to thank the students for brightening our January day with the beautiful bouquet of flowers.

Playground Lunch Recess Volunteers are needed:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 11:20-12:15
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 11:20-12:35 helping the Preschoolers in the lunch room and out on the playground.
If interested in helping, please contact Denise Charlier at
Denisecharlier@new.rr.com or 983-7915.

Do you want to share your love of running with students?  We have the opportunity for you!  We are in need of a Middle School Track Coach.  If you are interested, or would like more information, please contact John Steckart.

Students at the Middle School are permitted to bring tablets (such as iPads) to school.  However, they may use them in class only at the teacher's discretion.  They may NOT use them for anything other than class assignments.  A first infraction of these rules will result in the removal of the tablet.  It will be returned to a parent who must come to the Middle School office to claim it.  Students will be prohibited from using their tablets for the duration of this school year should there be a second infraction.

An exciting week of Faith, Academics and Service is planned for Catholic Schools Week: Jan. 28th - Feb. 5th.  Go to Catholic Schools Week to find a full calendar of events for student and parent opportunities.  Join us in Faith, for "the ultimate" gathering of our Notre Dame Community, in celebrating the Holy Mass together: Sat. Jan. 28th at 4:30 p.m. (St. Mary Catholic Community) or Sun. Jan. 29th at 9:00 a.m. (St. Francis Xavier).  The 4:30 Mass is a Bread Mass celebration for our 2nd graders.  And after the 9:00 Mass all are invited to the N.D. Open House and Breakfast. In addition to coming together for Mass all are welcome to participate actively, just like our students and teachers do every Friday as altar servers, readers, eucharistic ministers, gift bearers, ushers, and musicians.   Sign-up today at:
www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0E4EA5AB2CAB9-catholic

In addition to praying as a community, our N.D. Families are also invited to Serve. There are several  opportunities for families to participate in service.  The first is in donating goods throughout the week to the Souper Bowl of Caring. Go to Souper Bowl of Caring for detailed information.  A second is to volunteer your time and/or donate food items to the St. John Homeless Meal which our Middle School will be preparing.  Go to:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0C48ACA628A13-stjohns3  for detailed information   And a third is in praying the Rosary with the residents at the McCormick Nursing Home.  The Rosary opportunity will be Jan. 30th - Feb. 3rd, 4:30 p.m. at the McCormick Nursing Home.  To find out more and to sign up  please go to:http://www.SignUpGenius.com/go/60B0A44ADA6283-pray.

Show your Notre Dame pride!  The "We've Got Spirit" t-shirts are available to purchase and they come in sizes: Adult Small to Adult XL.  They are $8.00 for one or $14.00 for two!  You may purchase them in the Elementary School Office.

There has been a change to the published liturgy schedule. The 8th graders will pepare the Mass on January 27th, and the 3rd graders will prepare the Mass on February 10th.  Please note the changes.

Finally, you are all invited to attend the Frankie the Dog assembly at the elementary school tomorrow at 10:00 A.M.  Frankie is a dog who has overcome a disability and achieved great things. It will be a fun and inspirational event.

 In Spirit,

 Jeff
