November 16th, 2011
Dear Notre Dame Families:
This past week we continued our celebration of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. The eighth grade and Mr. Wittuhn led the assembly on the fruit "peace". It was very appropiate that we celebrated and promoted peace on Veterans Day (November 11th) The eighth grade did an awesome job!
The end of the tri-mester is quickly approaching (November 23rd). This Friday is an early release and teachers will have in-service in the afternoon. During this in-service teachers will be trained on the new powerschool software for report cards. Future in-services teachers will be focused on using Maps to help students set goals for future tests, and continuing to implement balanced literacy using the Daily Five/Three (elementary school parents ask your children about the Daily Five/Three).
Please keep your eyes open for the teacher Srip certificates form. This is a great way to show your appreciation for our HARD working staff!!! Please consider giving generously as our teachers generously give of their gifts. Traditionally, scrip has been given to teachers in place of Christmas gifts. You can give as little as $1 to as much as you want. This has been greatly appreciated by teachers and staff!!
AT HOME VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: We are in need of help with the teacher Srip gift certificate program. Contact Elisa at (337-1115 or email eagen@gracesystem.org) or Jenny at (337-1113 or email jlamers@gracesystem.org) to volunteer!
If some of you miss the "brown envelope" there are two options:
1. Pay $25 and we will send home a hard copy of the newsletter every Wednesday
or
2. Print off a hard copy of the newsletter on your printer at home.
As we prepare for the upcoming holidays let's think about those who are less fortunate than us. National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week is November 12-20. In the true spirit of Thanksgiving Notre Dame will hold a Food Drive during this time. Please send your nonperishable food items to school.
GOLDEN APPLE AWARD NOMINATION FORMS ARE DUE SOON! Each year the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce "Partners in Education" program sponsors the GOLDEN APPLE AWARDS, in an effort to recognize educators in our area that "inspire and prepare students for the challenges of the future." Our Notre Dame family is blessed with an amazing group of educators - please show your ND SPIRIT and nominate your child's teacher(s) today! Forms must be post marked BY Monday, November 21, 2011. For more information &/or additional nomination forms, please visit www.greenbaypartnersineducation.org.
Student Council will be having a blanket drive to help out the N.E.W. Homeless Shelter. If you have any new or gently used blankets to donate, there will be a collection box in both the offices. Student council will also be making some blankets.
Any question please email Mrs. Pagel @ ppagel@gracesystem.org
The cool wintery days are here, so please have your child(ren) dress appropriately for the weather. Our school policy is: "Starting with the first snowfall, children grades K-5 are required to wear snow pants, boots, hats and mittens whenever snow is on the ground. All students, middle school and elementary school, must wear coats, hats and mittens, and girls who wear skirts must wear leggings or pants when the weather is below freezing." Please use common sense when dressing for school. Mrs. Charlier (ES supervisor) has told me that many students are asking to be let in the building during recess because they are cold.
Attention Middle School Parents: Are your children missing hats, jackets, gloves, shoes, etc. ? Please check the lost and found! (at the end of the 1st floor hall near the gym) There is an inordinate amount of clothing and other items that will be donated to a worthy cause if not picked up by Tuesday, November 22nd.
There will be a MS dance next Friday, November 18th, at Notre Dame Academy. All 7th and 8th graders are invited to attend. The dance will be held from 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. sharp. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately should s/he attend. Guest passes for friends who don't attend a Catholic school are available in the Middle School office.
MS Parents: A permission field trip form went home with your children today. Please sign and return by Friday.
It's hard to believe but Thanksgiving break will begin on November 23rd of next week. I want to wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!
In Spirit,
Jeff

St. John's Shelter Meals
|
*St. John's Shelter Meal Point-Person Sign-Up* http://www.signupgenius.com/go/stjohns15
The St. John's shelter will be opening its doors to people looking for food and shelter throughout the next few months (Nov-April). The Notre Dame of De Pere School Community has been supporting this effort by providing a meal twice a month. We would like to continue this wonderful tradition, but will need the care, compassion and cooking skills of our school families. What a wonderful opportunity to work with our children to teach them about the shelter, while including them in preparing a meal to help those in need. Every other week we will prepare a meal for 30-60 guests at the shelter.
We are looking for one point person per meal from each grade to coordinate the meal with the families from that particular grade and/or team/troop (it takes about 1-2 hours for the point person to coordinate the meal). The first grade families took the first week and with an on-line tool to sign-up for individual items, it was easliy accomplished. We will be willing to help the point person set-up the on-line meal tool for the class along with suggestions for meals/recipies, etc if desired. The point person will help coordinate getting the meal items (in disposable containers) to the Dolski Center located at the middle school by 3:00 on the assigned day. Transportation of the meal from the Dolski Center to the shelter and serving of the meal are already set up.
You can find out more information about the St. John's Shelter including a wish-list at their website:
Keep them in mind as the holiday season approaches. This is a wonderful cause and we appreciate the continued support of our school families (this all does count for service hours too:))
You can easliy click on the link below to sign to be a point person and coordinate the meal (with our assistance if desired) for a particular group/date. After signing up, we will email you all the information you may need to make this meal possible.
Thank You in advance for signing up for one of these dates!

Adults Discussion: Location to be determined later, based on number of participants. Book: Catholicism- A Journey To The Heart of the Faith by Fr. Robert Barron. The hardcover book is available from Amazon for $15.98 and also available as an EBook. Read more about the book and the DVD series on Fr. Barron's website www.wordonfire.org.
"Father Barron delights in the ways our faith puts flesh on the word. He tells us stories. He brings out the art, architecture, pho- tos, and human faces. He shows on every page that those who call Ca- tholicism a 'system' are mistaken. It's a living Body. Fr. Barron wants the world to share his delight in that fact. Accessible to students yet stim- ulating for scholars, this book shows forth the unique civilization-forming potential of the Catholic faith and the Church's living tradition in everyage, including ours." -Scott Hahn |

Teen Discussion: 8th grade through high school. In the library at St. Mary, Sunday, December 4th at 6:16pm. Book: Bleeder by John J. Desjarlais The book can be purchased through Sophia Press at www.sophiainstitute.com
or www.amazon.com.
"When classics professor Reed Stubblefield is disabled in a school shooting, he retreats to a rural Illinois cabin to recover and write a book on Aristotle. Oddly, in the chill of early March, the campgrounds and motels of tiny River Falls are filled with the ill and infirm -- all seeking the healing touch of the town's new parish priest, reputed to be a stigmatic, who bears on his hands and feet the wounds of Christ."
