The Role of Metal Toxicity in Chronic Disease
|
Greetings!
A number of disorders are regarded as very difficult to treat, particularly once they have become chronic. These include chronic Lyme disease, ALS, Alzheimer's Dementia, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, chronic neuropathies, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, AIDS, Fibromyalgia, chronic hepatitis, and auto-immune disorders. All these disorders have certain common features which are of great interest and extremely important to understand. In this newsletter we shall begin by discussing Lyme Disease and in subsequent issues we will address the other disorders.
Lyme disease, caused by the spirochete, Borrelia Burgdorferi, is a significant problem in this country, especially in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic and upper Midwest regions. When treated early with antibiotics, many people experience successful resolution of their symptoms. However in a significant number of people, antibiotic treatment is unsuccessful, and many of these people become significantly disabled.
Clinicians working with this latter group have reported the presence of heavy metal toxicity in virtually every Lyme patient. I believe this to be a critical factor in determining whether antibiotic treatment for Lyme disease will be successful.
Heavy metal toxicity is known to produce severe oxidative stress and glutathione depletion, factors which lead to impaired immune function characterized by a shift from a Th1 to a Th2 mode. This renders the body unable to produce white cells that can release nitric oxide, so that Lyme organisms cannot be efficiently destroyed. Furthermore, the low glutathione level impairs the body's ability to detoxify and excrete heavy metals and chemicals (including pharmaceutical drugs), and destroys your body's ability to deal with free radicals, resulting in chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and chemical sensitivities as well as severe adverse drug reactions.
This situation teaches us multiple issues.
1. If you suffer from chronic Lyme disease that has not been successfully treated, it is imperative that you be tested for heavy metal toxicity with a hair test. This is a safe, painless and economical test which can reveal the presence of toxic metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic and uranium. It will also reveal evidence of mineral, thyroid, and adrenal imbalances and of trace mineral transport derangement, a sign of glutathione depletion.
2. Similarly, if you experience chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, chemical sensitivities or frequent adverse reactions to medications, it is extremely important that you have a hair test to check for metal toxicity.
