Greetings! |
Happy Spring!
When writing up the blurb for our TWM/CHICKS ROCK! Meetup in honor of Women's History Month, the phrase "I am woman, hear me roar!" came into my head as a title...I wasn't sure where it came from, but it gave me a good chuckle. Weeks later as I sat down to write this letter, I felt compelled to talk about us as 'Women Warriors', forgetting that I had written that line into our event description weeks earlier. Now, as I connect the two, it all makes sense....
I discovered that the phrase is the first line in a 1972 song by Helen Reddy, and it reminded me just how far we have come, and how much the women who came before us fought and sacrificed for the many feminist freedoms we take for granted that have allowed us to experience the choices and equality that we enjoy today.
I'm not saying things for the modern woman are perfect, as we still have work to do in more subtle ways, and I am generally referring to American women, but we have advanced to a place where young women today do not even question the fact that the sky is the limit for them in every area of life and that their financial independence is now the norm rather than the exception.
And now, with President Obama's historic forming of a White House Women's Council, there can be no doubt that we are indeed essential to the progress of today and tomorrow - so THANK YOU women warriors of the past for bringing us to this point!
Having said all that, my question to you is - now that we're here, what will YOU do to with all this opportunity? I believe it's as simple as just being yourself. Read more of my thoughts about this on CHICKS ROCK!.As for TWM, we've had lots going on that you can read about in the articles below, and of course you can be in touch with us on a daily basis through CHICKS ROCK! , the place for each of you to read about, comment on and even write your own post about topics relating to diversity and personal growth. Be sure to subscribe via email or feed - we'll also send out out periodic eblasts highlights so you don't miss a thing!
In other news, this January,TWM brought on a new intern, Bridget Meade! She has been doing a great job so far behind the scenes, and you can read all about her in the article below. We will be conducting our 2009 TWM Survey over the phone the next couple of months to get your feedback and input, so don't be surprised if you receive a phone call from Bridget asking you for your two cents about TWM and CHICKS ROCK!* (*and be sure that your phone number is listed in your subscriber profile by clicking on the Update Profile/Email Address link at the bottom of this email)We also wanted to welcome all of our new subscribers who found us through Equinox, Women For Hire, EventMe and other happenings we participated in recently.
We do hope to get back to doing more live events and other exciting programs when possible, but simply cannot do so at this time without significant financial resources. If you have been on our list for some time and enjoy reading these eNewsletters, or if you are just learning about TWM and support who we are and what we do and would like to see it continue and grow - please show it with your financial support .
Especially in this current economic climate, we want to continue offering you as much education, inspiration and motivation as possible to make the best of your life, so before Women's History Month is over, please consider becoming a member or donating at the highest level possible to help us keep on keepin' on!
As always we want to thank all of our past, present and future supporters - we would not be here without you!
Now let's hear you roar!

JOIN TWM'S TEAM FOR THE REVLON RUN/WALK on MAY 2nd |
JOIN TWM'S TEAM FOR THE REVLON RUN/WALK FOR WOMEN'S CANCERS
Saturday, May 2nd
TWM Member & Captain Mary Brower once again leads our 6th team to raise funds for women's cancer research! Here's her note to you:
Spring is here! The sun is shining!
The flowers are all in bloom! It is time to get out and enjoy nature and leave
the cold of winter behind. It is also time to once again join 40,000 of your
closest friends and be united in one voice and one
goal---the eradication of Women's Cancers!
On
Saturday, May 2nd, TWM's team will be participating in the 12th Anniversary Revlon Run/Walk For Women.
We will gather in the early morning hours in Time's Square and await the
kick-off (otherwise known as the firing of red and white confetti into the
air--the sanitation department must love us) to begin a leisurely (or not so
leisurely) 5k stroll into Central
Park. The event will end with a wellness expo (fancy
name for party), complete with music, free lunch (yea!!), rockin' goodie bags
and a chance to visit the booths for exciting information from the sponsors and
the chance to win prizes! Plus you get the added bonus of spending time outdoors
while making new friends! We will also be taking a team photo in the
park, so you can have a visual reminder of your great accomplishment (plus who
wouldn't want a photo with me).
This is a chance
to do some bonding, see what the early morning hours look like, try out those
new sneakers, firm up that rear (not that any of us need that mind you) and oh
yea--raise some dough for a really good cause.
If
you can't join us in the walk, you can join us in the fight by making a pledge or donation on behalf of one of our
team members. Your pledge will help fund important research into the
cause and cure of women's cancers, prevention, education and support service
programs. Every pledge will help bring us one step closer to a cure.
Please visit our team page to register or make a pledge

TWM SPOTLIGHT: Bridget Meade
|
TWM SPOTLIGHT: Bridget Meade
TWM's Spring Intern!
In January, Bridget Meade is the newest member of TWM's family. This accomplished young woman is a senior at Vassar College, where she studies Political Science and Women's Studies and plays left wing for the Women's Rugby team. Previously, she interned for a Congresswoman, studied abroad in Denmark, and is a dual citizen of the United States and Ireland. To welcome her to TWM, Bridget is the focus of this month's Spotlight. After working as a Fellow for Dutchess County Citizen's Action Network, Bridget decided to make a change. "I wanted to be a part of an organization that focuses on dialogue as a source of personal transformation and empowerment." After being selected for the internship, Bridget started collecting information about other organizations to add to TWM's link page, and will use the same to help develop professional partnerships.
She has also begun work on a membership survey, which will determine what members want to see from the TWM community, such as CHICKS ROCK! and Diversity Initiatives. Instead of performing regular administrative duties that require little creativity, Bridget feels that her position has given her the opportunity to make a significant contribution. "I feel like the work I am doing is meaningful and can help women feel engaged in TWM's community," she said. Bridget is using her internship to help prepare her for future plans. One goal is to go to Europe again to study their contemporary issues of discrimination. "I think TWM is a great opportunity for me to not only apply my studies to real life situations, but to learn how a community can draw on the diversity and strength [from] its members to inspire active, positive change in each other's lives." How does Bridget think TWM distinguishes itself from other non-profit organizations about women? "It isn't driven by a single issue that lectures *at* you, but rather TWM serves as a forum for women to meet and discuss their passions and experiences," she said. "I think this act of sharing is an incredibly powerful thing,as it encourages us to learn how to respect each other and ourselves."
Welcome to TWM, Bridget!
