Hello!

Wow, where do we begin?!  This is our first TWM eNewsletter since the end of May, and we all know how very much has happened and changed since then!

Now that the dust has settled on our historic election, I have had some time to reflect on what it has meant personally to me. As an American who dedicated her life to promoting unity through diversity - in fact our tagline, "Recognizing Our Unity; Celebrating Our Diversity" is actually a trademarked part of our logo - by founding
The Women's Mosaic nearly eight years ago, I could never have imagined a presidential race like this, let alone the outcome, and I could not be more proud, uplifted and full of hope for the future, and would be remiss in not taking a moment to talk about its relevance to TWM, which you can read about here.

chicks rock logoWe've also had lots going on around TWM - on September 15th we launched our new blog CHICKS ROCK! as a place for each of you to read about, comment on and even write your own post about topics relating to diversity and personal growth.  We have posted regularly every day since its launch - there are some great posts about the recent election among others so be sure to check it out if you are not already subscribed! We we also be sending out periodic emails for you with blog highlights so stay tuned for that as well.

chicks rock partyTo celebrate this new exciting addition to our work, we held our CHICKS ROCK! Launch Party on Thursday, September 18th and had over 50 of you come out to OBIVIA for champagne, cupcakes and to meet our regular contributors (pictured below l-r) Kekla Magoon, Sally Mercedes and Pauline Karakat.  Read more about our blog and the party in the articles below!

You'll also notice that we have expanded our reach in to the social networking world so be sure to check out and connect to our pages on Facebook,  Meetup, Twitter, MySpace and Change.org. Become a fan, write on our wall, let your friends know about us and spread the word about what we are doing! CHICKS ROCK! was also thrilled to get a mention in a recent eblast by The White House Project - so welcome to all of you who found us that way!
visioning workshop

Below you will also find articles and links to posts about our other recent events:  our semi-annual Visioning Workshop(photo right) which never ceases to amaze and inspire our participants, as well as our big multi-
colombia table johncultural event, TWM's Close-Up on Colombia.(photo left)which shed light on a country that comes with many stereotypes that we did our best to dispel, and one that gave Colombians and Colombian-Americans a way to share their very passionate pride!

As we approach our eighth year of existence, TWM is extremely proud of the over 85 events we have offered women to learn more about themselves and the world around them, and how our website and TWM eNewsletters have connected you to us and each other. Although you may have not been able to attend our events, we always receive positive feedback and gratitude that you are simply in the loop with what we are doing, which is one of the reasons why we started CHICKS ROCK!.  Therefore, we will focus more of our efforts in this area and encourage you to get involved by reading, writing and commenting on our blog.

We do hope to get back to doing more live events and other exciting programs when possible, but simply cannot do so at this point without significant financial resources.  If you have been on our list for some time and enjoy reading these eNewsletters, or if you are just learning about TWM and support who we are and what we do and want to see it continue and grow - please show it with your financial support

Because we are a small, grass-roots nonprofit organization, every penny counts and goes farther than you might expect, so please consider becoming a member or donating at the highest level possible to help us keep on keepin' on!

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, among the many blessings we count in our lives, here at TWM we especially want to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to all of our past, present and future supporters - we cannot exist without you!

Have a joyous holiday season and we'll see you next year!

With Peace & Gratitude,

TWM's CLOSE-UP ON COLOMBIA:
Coffee, Cumbia, Cartels & Shakira!
Tuesday, October 21

On Tuesday, October 21st over 35 guests made their way to Little Colombia in Jackson Heights to learn more about and celebrate all things Colombian!   We had a video presentation, a distinguished panel of speakers, delicious food and memorable music and dancing! The discussion opened up for the audience to hear from Colombian women who attended about what being Colombian meant to them, and we all went home with wonderful goodie bags from ProExport!

Thanks to John Moreno, Mariana Suarez, Jessica Restrepo and Claudia Castro for their help in planning the event, to all of our speakers and performers, and to our volunteers Kekla Magoon and Jessica Reinelt who helped staff it that night!

Some comments from our attendees:

...It was also really inspiring to know how passionate Colombians are about their country and culture. Hearing people talk about their experiences definitely helped me to see beyond some of the immediate connotations that come to mind when I think of Colombia.

I was invited to the event as a performer, and was extremely excited to see what a tremendous job so many people are doing in benefit of my country. I was born in Colombia, but was raised in NYC from the of 9. It's like us Colombians say, "we carry our pride as Colombians where ever we go." But after so many years being away from my country having been raised Colombian-American, we tend to forget the struggles our country and our people, especially women, still go through today. This event was extremely inspiring for me,seeing especially how people outside our culture are as passionate as we are. Thank you to all the organizers of this event. And to anyone who is reading please support this organization. They do an excellent job!!!

The Columbia event was a wonderful combination of people, education, music and food. It was a great experience and I look forward to the next event.

A portion of the proceeds from this event went to Caring For Colombia to support women who have been internally displaced as a result of the ongoing conflict and violence that has occurred (although has improved greatly in recent years) over the last four decades.

Below the speakers and organizers of this event l-r Claudia Castro, Adriana Ariztizabal, John Moreno, Mariana Suarez, Jenny Shapiro, Patricia Sancristan. Not pictured: Jessica Restrepo, Francisco Sierra Toro, Gregorio Uribe, Katherine Chacon and Jasper Marzola.

TWM FLASHBACK
                                                    TWM Flashback: Politics Schmolitics!

politics schmolitics     Pauline Karakat re-visits our women in politics panel four years later

At the dawn of the 2008 presidential race, the possibility of the next commander-in-chief of the United States of America being a woman was a strong one. Political insiders and media pundits were sure that Senator Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic nominee. None of them could forsee that Senator Barack Obama from Illinois would be the wrench that would deter the former First Lady's presidential aspirations.

Expectations were high back in 2004, when The Women's Mosaic(R) hosted Politics Schmolitics! a panel that featured an eclectic group of women shared their experiences in the tumultuous political arena in all levels of government, and lived to tell their tales. Four years later, I cannot help but wonder: What do they think about Clinton's loss to Obama for the Democratic nomination for president? What are their thoughts about the "maverick soccer mom" from Alaska as the Republican vice-presidential nominee? Their voices are sorely missed during this election. Their input would be far more interesting than what we have now: our current political players making bold promises and tearing each other apart, all in hopes of winning the highest office in the land.
