FIRST FEATURE
Irish Studies Program at LMU to host several events of Irish interest over the course of the next few weeks.
|
The series kicks off with;
"Black Irish: Embracing Diversity in Ireland and America,"
An informative multi-media presentation by Rotimi Adebari, the first person of African descent to become the mayor of an Irish town will be presented on Thursday, February 25 at 4:30 PM at Loyola Marymount University . The public is invited to this free event which will be held at the McIntosh Center, University Hall 3999 on the LMU campus.
Rotimi Adebari is a Nigerian-born Irish politician. He was elected as the first black mayor in Ireland. He fled Nigeria in 2000 and gained residency in Ireland under the Irish Born Child scheme. He and his family settled in County Laois. In 2004, he was elected as a city councilor in local elections. In June 2007 he was elected as mayor of Portlaoise Town Council. Upon arriving in Ireland, Rotimi Adebari immediately realized that things operated quite differently to what he was familiar with. So he went about exploring, understanding and ultimately embracing those differences. He made it his mission to promote cultural understanding and integration between the Irish and immigrant communities. To do this he set up "Optimum Point," a consultancy which trains companies and educational institutions in cross-cultural awareness. He also completed a Masters in Intercultural Studies from Dublin City University, while at the same time running in the local Town Council elections. He was successful in both, and is now one of the very few elected representatives in Ireland representing the immigrant communities. Once a week Mr. Adebari also hosts a radio program on Midlands 103FM. The program discusses social inclusion issues, and aims to inspire those who may be experiencing isolation, whatever their background. Each week he welcomes "A Hero from Zero"--a person who has overcome disadvantage or exclusion--to tell his or her story so others too may realize there is hope.
Sponsored by LMU's Irish Studies Program, with generous support from the Office of the Senior Vice President and Chief Academic Officer; The Office of Intercultural Affairs, the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts and African American Studies.
Next week, FIRST FEATURE continues detailing LMU's Irish Studies program with information on; The Boys of St. Columb's: presented by Writer and Co-Producer Maurice Fitzpatrick. The film screening will be held on Saturday, February 27 at 8:00 PM.
For further information, call 310-338-2318. To be placed on the LMU Irish Studies Program E-Mail List; send your request to: irishstudies@lmu.edu

Eighth Annual Irish Fair at FAIRPLEX Saturday and Sunday March 6 & 7 The Line up of Irish Entertainment has been released and Irish Music and Dance fans will be happy to see that most of the best Irish groups in Southern California are going to perform. Dublin 4 is one of the most popular and beloved Irish Bands; this group is always a crowd favorite and they always bring the Irish fun up to another level!! The Los Angeles Times wrote, "More authentic than green beer and as rich as a pint of Guinness. A show not to be missed!" We are very pleased to let our readers know that the Dublin 4 will be returning to Irish Days at FAIRPLEX! So to paraphrase the LA TIMES once again... The LA County Irish Fair will be a show not to be missed!!
DUBLIN 4 Dublin 4 has become one of the most sought after Irish bands in California. They have also been performing at numerous fairs, festivals, theaters, weddings, corporate and private events around the US and in Ireland. Together now for about nine years, Dublin 4 is immersed in traditional music. They have developed a unique style and song list that includes material that is rarely played to fans of Irish music. As a result of this, one of their greatest rewards is having the opportunity to play in front of new audiences at shows where an Irish band normally wouldn't have even been considered. Seeing Dublin 4 live brings an infectious energy that loyal fans crave. After a recent pub show, a fan noted "That was the best pub concert I have ever been to." The music is strictly traditional in style. They have a clear vision of what music they play and how they go about their craft. The impromptu Sunday sessions at O'Brien's Pub on Wilshire in Santa Monica were always great! On a quiet Sunday a couple weeks ago , one of our writers happened to drop by the pub and overheard a pair of patrons asking, "When will the Dublin 4 be back?" That seems to be a frequently asked question. We're glad we delivered part of the answer. Finally, we have also heard on good authority that Dublin 4 are currently working on their third CD...due to be released in June of this year!

New this year, The Galway Hooker Band. This group has been getting rave reviews and garnering a loyal following in Southern California since its inception just over a year ago.
The Galway Hooker Band is comprised of a group of musicians dedicated to their art. All have been long time musicians who have individually preformed in many different venues from orchestras to garages. A punk singer, a professional guitarist, a rock bassist, a hardened drummer, a longtime fiddler, and a classically trained flutist combine to make Irish music with a rock edge. Their unique blend of "in your face rock" and traditional Irish tunes pleases crowds of all kinds. The fans vary, in ages from 12 to 75, and in taste from rockers to Celtic music aficionados. Currently, they are the house band at Fitzgerald's Pub in Huntington Beach, packing the house to capacity once a month. The band has also preformed with, the world famous, Young Dubliners at the Coach House. www.myspace.com/thegalwayhookerband www.thegalwayhookerband.com

Patrick Facts
|
St Patrick, best known as the Missionary Apostle and patron Saint of Ireland was born in Roman Britain around 387AD. Captured as a youth and sold into slavery by Irish pirates; he turned to his Christian Faith for solace and strength during his years in captivity. When he finally escaped; he vowed to return to spread the "GOOD NEWS". The dates are murky in history but it is believed that he returned to Ireland about 415 and faithfully worked as a zealous priest and bishop for the rest of his long life. (Patrick dies in 493AD. Some sources say 460 or 461. --Ed.) One thing we know for sure; Patrick was a great man of strong will and deep faith in the TRIUNE GOD.
Saint Patrick's Breastplate A prayer and sometime hymn, written and preached by him his come down to us in several forms; it was written in Ancient Irish and translated into Latin during the Middle Ages. It demonstrates his Faith and Fighting Spirit. St. Patrick prepared these words before his battles and debates with the Druids. He credits these prayers for his victory over Pagans and his ability to build the Irish Church.
I bind myself today to God's Power to guide me, God's Might to uphold me. God's Wisdom to teach me, God's Eye to watch over me, God's Ear to hear me, God's Word to give me speech, God's Hand to guide me, God's Way to lie before me, God's Shield to shelter me...
Christ protect me today; Against every poison, Against burning, Against drowning, Against death-wounds...
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ at my right, Christ at my left, Christ in the fort...
This above excerpt is just a partial English translation; the entire work can be found online. One source is: www.newadvent.org/cathen/11554a.htm
