St. Valentine has a special place in the hearts of many Dubliners and for a very good reason. St. Valentine, one of the revered martyrs of the early Christian Church, is buried in Dublin. His bones, at least most of them, are resting at the Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin.
The Feast of St Valentine is celebrated on 14 February; on this day lovers exchange cards and gifts and in the natural world birds mate. Valentine was put to death by Roman Emperor Claudius II in 270AD. Legend has it that Valentine when waiting for his execution sent messages and letters of love to his followers. In 1835, Pope Gregory XVI gave the remains (Relics) of St. Valentine to a noted Irish Carmelite preacher and priest, John Spratt as a reward for his fine sermons. Spratt had the remains sent to Dublin to his monastery and church, now known as the Whitefriar's Chapel or Whitefriar Street Church. There, in this quiet refuge in Ireland's capital, St. Valentine has rested since 1836.
Details and a translation of the letter ordering the Relics to Dublin can be found online. Here is the link: www.eircom.net

Patrick Facts
Writings of Saint Patrick
There are only two pieces of literature left that historians and scholars believe were actually written by the hand of Saint Patrick; they are THE CONFESSION and A Letter To Coroticus. The Confession is believed to be written by the great saint toward the end of his long life around 450AD in Latin. It begins with the humble and pious words;
I, Patrick, a sinner, a most simple countryman, the least of all the faithful..."
The other is a personal letter to Coroticus, a "King" perhaps from Wales who was responsible for raids against convents established by St. Patrick and his followers. It was also written in Latin and also begins with the same famous and humble line: "I, Patrick, a sinner..." Details of these inspirational works are readily available on the internet.
Here are two links: www.ancienttexts.org
www.newadvent.org/Letter
Next week; a third work attributed to Patrick, written in ancient Irish, and known as "The Breastplate". ********************************************************

"Da." The Tony ® Award winning play. Written by Hugh Leonard. "Da" is set in May, 1968. Charlie, a Londoner in his early 40s, returns to his home town in Ireland to bury his adoptive father and settle his affairs. Far from achieving closure, he is haunted mainly his father's ghost. Also, his mother's ghost, and the ghosts of his younger self, and younger versions of his best pal and his first employer. Far from being a world left behind, Charlie's old Irish home is still very much with him. More than anything else, his Da is still with him, the father that Charlie would describe as exasperating. This most Irish of 20th Century plays (it premiered in 1973) will open just a few days before St. Patrick's Day. It's a perfect play for the season.
