Would You Have
It Any Other Way?
A few weekends ago, I had coffee with a friend whose five-year old son is Deaf. This gentleman, a hearing father, needed someone to talk to. In his eyes, I could see that he was somewhat still grieving. In his eyes, I could see overcast clouds shadowing glimpses of joy. We talked about some of a struggles he was having simply relating to his son and simply maintaining a relationship with his son. I responded that communication is the foundation, communication is the bridge, and communication is the solution. In his face and reaction, I could see a muted 'Yeah, yeah, yeah...' I could see this is not what he was looking for. I was then reminded of myself when I discovered that my daughter Xóchitl is Deaf. For an instant, there was a moment of profound sadness. The world is not a perfect place. There is still so much ignorance and still so much for the world to learn about the beauty of being Deaf. This sadness was precipitated by the thought of Xóchitl having to, one day, endure this world on her own. Naturally, I looked up and thought, 'Why me?' While looking up, the sun's rays hit directly upon my whole being and blanketed me with hope and a strong sense of validation. I reflected... With each child brought into the world, perhaps parents are chosen. Special children require special parents. I was CHOSEN for Xóchitl. I was chosen to be her Daddy. I was chosen and given the honor of raising such a beautiful, Deaf child. I believe we, as parents, are chosen because we have the wisdom, the courage, the compassion, and the love to be this special parent for this special child. Would you have it any other way?
Upon sharing my thoughts with my friend, his perception completely changed and recently, in his eyes, I could see renewed hope and most importantly, a sense of pride in being chosen to be the father of his Deaf son. All he needed was the assurance that he is the right person for the job and now, I don't think he would have it any other way...

¿Por Qué No Yo?
Hace algunos fines de semana, tomé café con un amigo cuyo hijo sordo tiene cinco años de edad. Este caballero, un padre oyente, necesitaba a alguien con quien hablar.
En sus ojos, pude ver que aún se encontraba de luto por haber descubierto la sordera de su hijo. En sus ojos, podía ver un nublado gris imponiendo una sombra sobre destellos de alegría.
Hablabamos de algunas de las luchas que estaba teniendo simplemente en relación con su hijo y simplemente en mantener una relación con su hijo. Yo le respondía que la comunicación es la base, la comunicación es el puente, y la comunicación es la solución.
En su rostro y en la reacción, pude ver una silenciado "Sí, sí, sí ..." Pude ver que esto no es lo que estaba buscando.
Me acordé entonces de mí mismo cuando descubrí que mi hija Xóchitl es sorda. Por un instante, hubo un momento de profunda tristeza. El mundo no es un lugar perfecto. Todavía hay tanta ignorancia y todavía le queda mucho al mundo para conocer la belleza de ser sordo. Esta tristeza se precipitó por el pensamiento de que Xóchitl, un día, tendría que soportar este mundo por su cuenta. Naturalmente, miré hacia arriba y pensé: '¿Por qué yo?'
Mientras miraba hacia arriba, los rayos del sol pegaban directamente sobre todo mi ser y me cubrió con la esperanza y un fuerte sentido de validación.
Pensé ... Con cada niño que viene al mundo, tal vez los padres son elegidos. Es decir, se requieren padre especiales para niños especiales. Fui ELEGIDO para Xóchitl. Fui elegido para ser su papá. Fui elegido y dado el honor de criar a una hermosa, niña sorda. En vez de preguntar, "¿Por qué yo?", decidí "¿Por qué no yo? Creo que nosotros, como padres, fuimos elegidos porque tenemos la sabiduría, el valor, la compasión y el amor que se necesita para ser padre especial para niños especiales. ¿Lo habrán deseado de otra manera?
Luego de compartir mis pensamientos con mi amigo, su punto de vista dio un cambió por completo y, recientemente, en sus ojos, pude ver una esperanza renovada y lo más importante, un sentido de orgullo en ser elegido para ser el padre de su hijo sordo.
Lo único que necesitaba era la seguridad de que él es la persona adecuada para ese trabajo y ahora, yo no creo que lo habría deseado de ninguna otra manera...

About the Author
Tomás García, LifeLinks author of Conocimiento, is a faculty member at East Los Angeles College in the Department of Foreign Languages teaching American Sign Language. Having a Deaf Mother and Grandfather, Tomás became Deaf as an infant. A personal and assertive passion allowed him to learn Spanish at a very young age and today uses his skills & knowledge to bridge cultural and identity gaps between Latino families and their Deaf children.
