Las Mañanitas

This weekend our family came together to celebrate our son's Ixtli's fifth year of life. It was a beautiful testimony to our family's desire to be all-inclusive in all languages and cultures: American Sign Language, English, and Spanish!
For my Deaf daughter, Xóchitl, and for me, a Deaf individual, I wanted to ensure we could become ONE with the entire family and participate in the strong sense of community brought upon by traditional piñata and birthday songs.
The most famous of them all is 'Las Mañanitas', traditionally sung as a serenade the morning of a person's birthday or before a cake is cut.
In the rich tapestry of our community, I could identify a number of different people who could help interpret this song for us. A friend of mine, Anthony Díaz, happily obliged and did a phenomenal job.
LifeLinks is proud to provide us all yet with another idea on how we can strengthen familial and community ties and TRULY exemplifying that 'it takes a village to raise a child...'
After watching Anthony's interpretation, many were teary-eyed and realized how even the small things we do or those extra steps we take can make a difference in the life of a Deaf child.
Let us not forget that we don't have to wait for a birthday party for this to happen. Using our wonderful Spanish Video Relay Services, we can begin taking those extra steps right away.

Las Mañanitas
 Este fin de semana nuestra familia tuvo una reunión para celebrar los cinco años de vida de mi hijo Ixtli. Fue un hermoso testimonio al deseo de nuestra familia de incluir a todos los elementos bellos de nuestros idiomas y culturas: ASL, inglés, y español.
Para mi hija sorda, Xóchitl, y a para mi, un individuo sordo, queria asegurarme que los dos nos sintieramos unidos a la familia entera y que pudieramos participar en el sentimiento fuerte de comunidad que se llevaba a cabo através de varios cantos de piñatas y cumpleaños.
Quiza la más famosas de estas canciones es Las Mañanitas que se canta de serenata por la mañana al que cumple años o poco antes de que se parta el pastel.
En la riquez de recursos de nuestra comunidad, pude identificar a varias personas que me pudieran ayudar y traducir la canción para mí y para mi hija. Un amigo mío, Anthony Díaz, se dispuso a ayudarnos con mucho cariño ¡e hizo un trabajo fenomenal!
Con mucho orgullo LifeLinks les presenta con otra forma y manera de fortalecer nuestros enlaces familiares y de la comunidad y realmente ejemplifica que se requiere un 'pueblo para criar a un hijo...'
Después de observar la traducción de Anthony, muchos con ojos llorosos se dieron cuenta que realmente son estos pasos extras y menores que hacen una GRAN diferencia en la vida de un hijo sordo.

About the Author
Tomás García, LifeLinks author of Conocimiento, is a faculty member at East Los Angeles College in the Department of Foreign Languages teaching American Sign Language. Having a Deaf Mother and Grandfather, Tomás became Deaf as an infant. A personal and assertive passion allowed him to learn Spanish at a very young age and today uses his skills & knowledge to bridge cultural and identity gaps between Latino families and their Deaf children.
